6 Tips for Getting Your Toddler to Stay In Bed

toddler sleep tipsToddlers are sweet, active, special, and they amaze us every day. But some of them love to test us and fight sleep. For every toddler who goes to sleep peacefully there are a handful who try to negotiate, delay, or stall. There are so many parents who struggle with the bedtime process that I’m here to share some helpful information with you. Use these six tips to help create a solid bedtime process so your toddler will stay in bed.

Tip #1: Make your bedtime routine fun:

Be careful not to rile your toddler up before bedtime, but do things that will help them enjoy the bedtime process.

Try having fun throughout the bedtime process:

  • Sing silly songs while brushing teeth.
  • Have a race to get into pajamas.
  • Play a fun game as part of your bedtime routine (I Spy, Rhyme words, Simon Says).

Tip #2: Teach your child what is expected of them:

As parents we sometimes expect a lot from our children. So much, that we forget that a few short years ago, they were just a tiny little newborn that you were rocking to sleep. We have to realize that as much as we would like LOVE for our kids to oblige everything we do and say, they are just young kids whose minds run a mile a minute. By understanding that going through a bedtime routine isn’t always fun or easy for some toddlers — we can help make it easier and more fun by thinking about things from a child’s perspective.

Tip #3: Set Sleep Rules:

Does your toddler really know what it means to go to sleep? Ask them. It would be great to hear the different responses. Assuming your toddler is out of a crib and transitioned to a big bed – your child’s big room allows them a lot of freedom and of course some would choose to play rather than go to sleep. If you are struggling on a nightly basis to get your child to sleep, get back to basics. Have a family meeting and explain the rules of sleep and how sleep works.

You lay in your bed, shut your eyes and go to sleep.” (yes that simply)

Explain in your child’s language the benefits of sleep and how it helps them grow big and strong and spend more time (playing at the park, running fast, etc.).

Tip #4: Eliminate the power struggle:

You are the parent and you set the rules and the time that your toddler goes to sleep. But, giving options and picking your battles you eliminate a full on power struggle and will make your bedtime routine much more enjoyable (for both you). Provide options throughout the bedtime process to help empower your child:

  • Would you like to wear these pajamas or these?
  • Would you like to brush your teeth before or after bath?
  • Would you like to pick your books or should I?

Tip #5: Offer Rewards for Following the Sleep Rules:

Use a sticker chart to help reward your toddler for following the sleep rules. Have they stayed in their bed the whole night? Could they earn a shiny sticker? Get your child invested in the process by having them help make the chart (or pick out an online printable). Include them in shopping and picking out the stickers.

Tip #6: Blame Somebody Else:

Going to sleep is not always your toddler’s favorite subject and if your child is still resistant to the act of going to sleep, I give you permission from this point on to blame me. Tell them that you have a friend that is going to help you follow your sleep rules. This will help you not look like the bad guy and hopefully your child wants to do what Sleep Susie says.

Share your success!

So who’s ready to make some changes to help set the framework for your toddler’s sleep? By following some of these tips they will help with implementing changes so your toddler can sleep better at night (without the battles). Good luck!

10 Ways to Prepare for a New Baby

bringing new baby homeBringing a new baby into the world is an exciting and joyful time for new parents. They look forward to bonding with their little one. For first time parents, there will be a lot of adjusting. Taking care of an infant can be a round-the-clock job, which can be overwhelming for parents. My husband and I have recently brought a new baby into our family and we want to offer you some tips for bringing your new baby home.

1. Get your rest while baby sleeps.

Whenever baby is taking a nap is when mom should be getting her sleep as well. Forget about trying to get housework done while baby is asleep. It is much more important for you to get your rest so that you have the energy to take care of baby and you both stay healthy.

2. Swaddling helps soothe baby to sleep

Swaddling provides baby with a warm and soothing womb-like environment for extra comfort and security. It also helps prevent startle reflex in babies which will have them waking themselves up while they sleep. A baby swaddle like the Miracle Blanket or the Woombie makes swaddling super easy for parents and both swaddles are safe and effective. Once baby starts to roll over this is a sign that swaddling is no longer safe, in which case it is a good idea to switch to a transition sleep garment.

3. Breastfeeding is beneficial for both mom and baby.

Breastfeeding provides babies with all of the essential vitamins and nutrients they need and is full of disease-fighting substances to keep baby healthy, especially during baby’s first six months. Breastfeeding has been shown to lower the risk of childhood cancers, stomach viruses, ear infections and several other illnesses. It also protects baby from developing allergies later on and it improves cognitive development. For moms, breastfeeding reduced stress, postpartum depression, and reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

4. Get the right car seat.

For infants under 2 years of age, they must be placed in a rear-facing car seat for their safety as the back of the seat will cradle baby’s head, neck and torso. Always read the owner’s manual to make sure you are installing the seat correctly and correctly using the seat belt or harness. Make sure the harness straps fit snugly over your baby and don’t dress them in bulky clothing.

5. Keep baby safe from germs.

Remember to always wash your hands before handling baby and have any visitors wash their hands as well because babies have weak immune systems are susceptible to infection. Let your children hold the new baby but don’t let them kiss the baby’s face if you want to be on the safe side. Breastfeeding baby also helps give baby’s immune system a boost.

6. Learn how to prevent diaper rash.

A diaper rash is pretty common because babies have sensitive skin and the rash will go away on its own but there are some things you can do to prevent it. Make sure to change baby’s diaper frequently and change a poopy diaper as soon as possible. When using a cloth diaper you should wash it in a fragrance-free or all-natural detergent for sensitive skin. You can also apply a diaper rash cream on baby after cleaning the area with a wipe.

7. Place baby to sleep on his back.

Babies must be placed to sleep on their backs in order to reduce the risk of SIDS. The reason for this is that a baby sleeping on his stomach may not get enough oxygen or he risks re-breathing his own exhaled carbon dioxide. It’s also important not to place anything else in the crib with baby, so no pillows, blankets, stuffed toys, etc. You don’t want anything to accidentally fall on baby’s face and potentially suffocate baby.

9. Trust your instincts.

Mother’s instinct is always right so practice listening to your gut instincts and follow them. You won’t always know what’s best and every parent makes mistakes with their first baby but that is how you learn. Also understand that what works for one baby doesn’t always work for another. Instead of constantly doubting or second guessing yourself, be confident that you know your baby best and can get the best feel for what he needs.

8. Get some fresh air.

You’ll go crazy if you stay cooped up in the house for too long so head outside with baby and get some fresh air. If the weather is warm go for a walk in the park and bring a picnic blanket or baby play mat so you and baby can lie down on the grass. Just be sure to keep baby protected from the sun and dressed appropriately for the weather.

10. Ask for help if you need it.

As a new parent you sometimes struggle to juggle everything at home and raising a baby is hard work. You will need to take some time for yourself and get some rest before you become completely worn down. If you feel like you need a break, don’t be afraid to ask a friend or family member for help. They will understand that everyone needs a little help sometimes, even “supermom”. If you have any questions (even if you think it’s a strange question), talk to your pediatrician or even call up a fellow mom who will be understanding.

transition baby from swaddleWritten by Stephanie Parker from Sleepingbaby.com, inventors of the Zipadee-Zip

The motto for Sleeping Baby, makers of the Zipadee-Zip, is: “Inspiring Dreams One Night at A time,” and that, in a nutshell, is how it all started…with one little dream that has since become the Parker family’s reality. When Brett and Stephanie Parker’s daughter, Charlotte, was born, the feeling that welled up inside of them was indescribable; they never realized until first looking into those baby blues of hers that they were even capable of that kind of love.

When it was time to transition baby from swaddling, the Parkers tried every sleep sack on the market and every swaddle weaning trick they could find for nearly two weeks and nothing worked to get baby Charlotte to fall and stay asleep.

Stephanie became determined to restore sleep and sanity to their household and set out to find a solution that would soothe Charlotte’s startle reflex and provide her the cozy womb-like environment she loved so much but still give her the freedom to roll over and wiggle around in her crib safely. Out of sheer desperation and exhaustion, the Zipadee-Zip was born. The first Zipadee-Zip(R) Stephanie put together on her little sewing machine worked like magic!

To date tens of thousands of Zipadee-Zips have been sold and all from word-of-mouth marketing. It is so rewarding for the Parkers to see other parents and babies getting the sleep they both need and deserve!

5 Tips to Raise Your Baby Organic

raise baby organicParents are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of “going green.” Not only does living an organic lifestyle protect the planet, but we protect ourselves and our families from harmful substances and ensure we don’t overspend our planet’s resources.

The first three years of your baby’s life (and her time spent in the womb) are important for her development and her body is sensitive to every substance she comes in contact with. The sooner you adopt an organic lifestyle, the safer your child will be.

It’s easier to raise a baby in an organic household than you may think. Try incorporating one change at a time. When you’re comfortable with a new part of your life, include another. Use these five tips to raise your baby organic.

1. Organic Food

Organic food products are easier to come by today than ever before. Most supermarkets in the country have an organic section. If you’re breastfeeding, eat organic food so it’s passed on to your child. Organic baby formula is available for mothers who don’t breastfeed. If you have a hard time finding organic baby food jars, make your own baby food. Puree your favorite organic products for great flavors and savings.

2. Organic Clothing and Toys

Use clothes and toys made from safe, organic products without harmful chemicals. By limiting your child’s exposure to harmful plastics and oils, you can create a safer environment. Reuse products from previous children or items donated by your family and friends. Buying less new products means less trash in our landfills.

3. Protect the Air

The air in your home may not seem dirty, but it may be thanks to fumes from harsh cleaning products, secondhand smoke, and residue from industrial materials. The best defense against these fumes is the outdoors. Open your windows to let the air cycle whenever you can and add plants to your home.

4. Natural Cleaning Products

Most stores carry several types of organic cleaning products. They don’t use chemicals or synthetics to clean your surfaces. In fact, many natural, harmless substances can handle most dirty jobs. Vinegar is an antiseptic that kills most bacteria and viruses, including mold. Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and lemon juice are some other safe, effective cleaners.

Organic Nursery Products

You’ll be purchasing a vast array of supplies and furniture before your baby arrives. Make sure each item is made from organic materials that won’t harm your child, especially the crib, changing table, and bassinet. Your child will spend a lot of time in or around these items, so it’s important they are safe.
