5 Tips for Cleaning Your Baby’s Cloth Diapers

tips for washing cloth diapersEco-conscious parents all over are using cloth diapers because of their myriad of benefits, including their reduced waste. Using cloth diapers means no more tossing away each diaper after it has been soiled, which is much more environmentally friendly. Many parents aren’t ready to make the switch because they have a lot of questions about cloth diapering. I’ve done my research and would like to share my tips.

While cloth diapers can be a pricey initial investment, they make sense over the long haul. You’ll save money when you consider how much you would spend for disposables during your child’s diaper-wearing years and they’re even cheaper if you use the same set for multiple children. Newer cloth diapers are breathable, but won’t result in leaking. Plus, there are tons of adorable colors and styles to outfit your little one’s behind.

When it comes to laundering your cloth diapers, it’s easy if you use the right detergent. Make sure you dump any solids from the diaper into the toilet and then toss the diaper into your diaper pail. Once the pail is full you’re ready to do a wash. Toss the diapers into the washing machine and do a rinse/wash first. Next you will add 2-3 tbsp of your detergent and do a wash cycle. Do a double rinse and then you’re done!

There are five variables that come into play when washing your cloth diapers:

1. The swish

Swish or agitation is a very important component of any good wash routine. The diapers need to move around in the washtub and also rub up against one another to scrub out the dirt. When you have too many diapers in a load, they rotate in a bunch. Not enough diapers and they end up swimming around. Load your machine to the halfway point so you get a good amount of swish.

2. Temperature

A basic cloth diaper wash routine consists of a rinse on cold, a wash on hot, and then another rinse on cold. Hot water will kill the bacteria in the diaper. Note that the best way to treat a stain is to rinse it out at the same temperature the stain was created. Rinse cold for ice cream stains and rinse warm for poop stains.

3. Your water

Water is what carries away soils and allows the detergent to do its job. However, water contains impurities like minerals that can bind with detergent and makes it difficult to get a good clean. You can compensate for the type of water you have by using a special detergent.

4. Time

The amount of time that your diapers are in the wash will also help determine your outcome. The chemicals in your detergent have different reaction times that can be affected by temperature and water quality so a longer wash cycle can get you better results. This allows the detergent to actually do its job as opposed to being flushed down the drain. Lengthen your wash cycle if you have hard water.

5. Detergent

Your detergent can help overcome issues like poor water quality and hardness. Start off with 1-3 tbs but adjust depending on the other four variables. Rockin’ Green laundry detergent is eco-friendly and never contains any harsh chemicals. It is perfect for baby’s extra sensitive skin. It works tough on dirt and stains while being gentle to the environment and your budget.

Help your family help the environment by using safe, hard-working eco-friendly products that you can feel good about using in your own home.

4 Ways to Keep Kids Busy in the Summer

summer ideas for kidsIt’s summertime! That means school-aged children will be home, bored and looking to get out of the house. Entertaining your kids and keeping up with life’s other demands can be challenging, especially if you’re a breastfeeding mom or otherwise caring for a baby. You’ll need some entertainment options that don’t require your direct participation. Here are some ideas to keep your kids busy during the summer break.

1. Send them to summer camp.

Daily summer camps are perfect for busy moms and bored kids. Your local community likely has lots of summer camp options for children of any age. Some are camps are designed specifically for certain activities, like art, science, or basketball. Others are more general and give kids freedom to play however they like while also running organized games. They can play on a kickball team or ride the swings with their friends. The camp organizers are good about keeping kids active.

2.  Visit the public pool.

Admission to your local community pool is usually free or very cheap. If you don’t have a public pool, memberships to the YMCA are also inexpensive. Take your kids to the pool for a few hours for them to swim and splash around. You can hang out nearby with your baby while your older children play. If your baby is old enough, introduce him or her to the water! This option doesn’t give you much time to get chores done, but you’ll spend time with your family.

3. Invest in a set of bicycles.

Riding bikes is a timeless activity for kids. They love the excitement and independence. You can pick up some quality bikes for your kids without breaking your bank. Not only will they spend the day getting exercise, but they’ll burn off all that young energy and fall right asleep later. With a lawn chair and a glass of iced-tea, you can relax outside and watch them pedal up and down the street.

4. Create a gallery of artwork.

Gather all the arts and craft supplies you can. You’ll need construction paper, crayons, markers, string, tape, paste, paints, wrapping paper, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, and anything else you or your children desire. Cover a table in a sheet you don’t mind ruining and spread all the supplies over the table. Have them spend the day creating their own artwork for display all over the house. Challenge them to tell you what they created and what it means.

nursing pillowGurst blog by Sandy Clark, Inventor of San Diego Bebe Eco-Nursing Pillow

San Diego Bebe® was designed by San Diego native Sandy Clark, a passionate breastfeeding advocate and mother of twins. Clark was inspired at a San Diego beach one day where she witnessed a young mother unsuccessfully nursing her baby. As the mother struggled to keep a blanket across her shoulder for privacy while her baby wailed from heat and hunger, Clark vowed then and there to design a product that would help resolve the issue of discretion while nursing in public. San Diego Bebe® was born that day.

After Clark read a recent Duke University study on toxic chemicals in baby products, she sent her nursing pillow to Duke to be tested and reviewed. Duke University Chemical Scientist Dr. Heather Stapleton, the nation’s leading fire-retardant research specialist, and a new mother herself, said, “It’s wonderful to find a nursing pillow on the market that is not treated with chemical flame-retardant additives in the filling material. San Diego Bebe® Eco-Nursing Pillow is not only a very supportive pillow with amazing features for discreet nursing, but is also free of flame-retardant chemicals that have been shown to cause adverse health effects in animal studies. I applaud this manufacturer for taking steps to produce high quality products that meet the same flammability standards without using these chemicals.”

San Diego Bebe® Eco-Nursing Pillow is the healthiest and most innovative nursing pillow on the market. Made with virgin Eco*Loft™ fiber, a non-toxic and hypo-allergenic foam-alternative, it’s void of harmful chemicals. It’s also recyclable and eco-friendly. San Diego Bebe® is available in two versions, for nursing one baby or twins. The entire line is baby-safe, and is covered with deluxe plush fabrics including organic cotton.

5 Tips for Organic Grocery Shopping

organic grocery shoppingIf you are considering having your family eat organically, then you have probably already noticed that it is more expensive than regular food. That being said, there is a reason it cost more, because it is better for you! Organic food is worth paying extra for because the food is safer, more nutritious, and doesn’t have tons of chemicals! If you want to go organic, but are worried about the costs, know that there are ways to eat organic foods and stick to your budget! Here are five tips for organic grocery shopping:

1. Shop around

There are tons of places to buy organic foods, way more than just your local grocery store. If you are buying your organic food from the organic section of your grocery store, you are going to be paying more. Find out what other stores are in your area and see what kinds of organic foods they carry. Trader Joe’s is a great place to shop for organic foods, and I find that they can even be cheaper than my local grocery store!

2. Know where organic counts

Meats, dairy and sweet fruits are the most important products to buy organic. When making your grocery list keep this in mind. You don’t need to buy organic granola bars; the regular ones are just fine, and cheaper! If you are worried about spending a lot on organic food, just buy your meats, dairy and fruit from the organic section.

3. Buy in bulk

Since organic food is so expensive, it is wise to buy in bulk.  Many stores carry organic grains and cereal in large packages. Try to find as many non-perishable items as you can and buy them in bulk. In the long run you will end up saving money and trips to the grocery store.

4. Drink organic coffee and tea

Did you know that the coffee you are drinking every morning could have been grown and processed with harsh chemicals? Like other organic crops, organic coffee beans and tea are grown and processed without harsh chemicals or pesticides. Ensure that the next time you stock up on coffee beans, you buy organic ones.

5. Grow your own!

If you really want to make sure that your family is eating organically, grow it yourself! Fruits and veggies are easy to grow and taste the best when they are fresh! Not only will you be saving money by growing your own, but it is a great activity to do as a family. Grow a garden, save money, bond with your family, and go organic!

Tips for Creating a Well-Balanced Meal Plan for Toddlers

well balanced meal for toddlersIt’s no secret that toddlers can be picky. I’m sure that you have had nights where your toddler refuses to eat his carrots! This is fairly normal for that age, so don’t freak out that your toddler seems like the only one who won’t eat their veggies. All you have to do to fix this problem is to get a little creative. Here are five tips for creating a well-balanced meal plan for your toddler so that they will get the nutrition they need:

1. Make sure it consists of the right foods

When planning your toddler’s dinner, you should make sure that you include a grain, veggies, fruits, milk and protein. These are necessary nutrients for a healthy well-balanced meal.  One meal I know my toddler will eat is chicken, a protein, with a yummy fruit salad, a slice of whole grain bread and a glass of milk. Normally I have carrots and dip as a dinner before snack. This is a great way to get almost all of the important food groups in one meal.

2. Pre-dinner snack

Like I previously stated, I am a big fan of the before dinner snack. One tip I have is to make sure it is a healthy light snack. Oreos, chips or cookies is not a good choice. Carrots, sliced apples, strawberries or celery are good choices. Make sure to choose a snack that they don’t eat often, so that they can get those nutrients too.

3. Always include milk

Milk is so important for a growing child. It helps to build strong bones! Try to always have them drink milk for lunch and dinner. If they aren’t big milk fans, add a tiny squirt of chocolate syrup. All kids love chocolate milk! You can also incorporate milk into their diet by putting it in their morning cereal or oatmeal.

4. Protein + veggies

One great way to get protein and veggies into your child’s diet is by having sandwiches for lunch. Make sure that you make the sandwich on whole wheat or grain bread. You can use any kind of high in protein meat that your child likes, and then top it off with veggies. Sandwiches are great, because they won’t even notice they are eating vegetables.

5. Apples and peanut butter

Protein, check. Fruit, check. Yummy, double check! Apples with peanut butter are a creative way to get your child to eat some healthy foods. Slice the apples into finger-sized bites and apply as much peanut butter as your toddler likes.

How to Have Fun Gardening With the Kids

create a garden with kidsNow that it is summertime, it’s time to start doing more outdoor activities with the kids. Want to get your kids outside to enjoy all that nature has to offer? I know just the activity! One really great activity that both you and the kids would enjoy is gardening. Gardening can be a lot of fun! By the end of your day not only will you have your summer flowers planted, but you will have also bonded with your kids, and worked up a sweat. Here are five ways to have fun gardening with the kids:

1. Give them their own garden beds.

If you are just having them help you, gardening isn’t going to be much fun for the kids. Whether you use raised beds, containers, or ground pots, be sure to give each child their own to work on. They will have so much fun creating their own garden and feel proud of their accomplishment when they are finished!

2. Use seeds.

Although it may seem easier to use a kit, planting actual seeds is better. Your child will get to learn the process of how a plant grows and will be able to see it start from a seed and turn into a flower. You should also let your child tend to the plant once it has grown, they will really enjoy taking care of it and it teaches them responsibility!

3. Play music.

To make gardening seem less like a chore, and more like playtime, play some music while you are planting. Make sure you pick a station or CD your child likes. Take breaks and have mini dance parties to spice up the planting. Your child will love dancing among the pretty plants!

4. Make a fairy garden.

One way you can have fun gardening with the kids is by making a fairy garden. This one is especially great if you have a daughter. Girls love fairies and will love showing off her garden to her friends. It doesn’t take a lot to make a fairy garden, just a few tools and a lot of happy energy! Here’s how you make a fairy garden.

5. Build a worm farm

You can have the fairy garden for your daughter and a warm farm for your son! A worm farm could keep your son occupied for hours. They will be so consumed with the worms and dirt that they will forget you promised them ice cream for dessert! Not only will this activity teach kids how to look after a part of nature, but it will also teach them a bit of science, as they watch the worms turn soil into nutrient-rich fertilizer for all the springtime seeds they have just planted!

6 Ways to Design an Eco-Friendly Nursery for Baby

design an eco-friendly space for babyWhen you’re preparing to have a baby, you’ll probably look through all sorts of baby magazines to get an idea of the perfect space. Unfortunately, many of the products used in these pictures may be harmful to your new child. It’s vitally important that you consider the safety of the room your child will be spending a majority of the time.

Many parents are taking the initiate to “go green” and ensure their children live in the best environment possible. Here’s how you can design an eco-friendly space for your baby.

1. Choose a safe mattress and crib bedding.

Infants will spend a lot of time in their crib, so it’s important that you buy organic bedding and accessories. Even some of the so-called eco-friendly options contain trace amounts of chemicals and toxins you would rather not have near your children. Choose fabrics made with natural dyes. If you are stuck with a traditional mattress, top it with an organic mattress pad and sheet set.

2. Use eco-friendly cleaning products.

As a society, we’re becoming more aware of how dangerous the cleaning products beneath our sink can be. Pick up some organic cleaning products for use in the baby’s room. Be sure to check all the labels for any harsh chemicals or industrial compounds. For bathing purposes, always use a natural cleaning agent on your baby’s soft, delicate skin.

3. Paint properly.

Painted walls continue to emit toxins up to three years after they’re dry. Use paint with no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If you’re painting the room for your new little one, make sure to do it a few weeks in advance. Give the room plenty of time to air out – leave the windows open and a fan running. Leave the baby’s furniture out of the room during painting and drying.

4. Use eco-friendly furniture.

Cribs, dressers, changing tables, and shelves made with laminated wood, pressed wood, medium density fiberboard, and particle board can emit formaldehyde due to the glue in the products. Make sure everything is formaldehyde free, including the paint on each piece. If the product doesn’t have a label, look it up online based on where it was purchased so you can learn about it.

5. Stock it with organic clothing.

If you’re going to great lengths to make sure your nursery is full of safe products, you shouldn’t neglect baby’s clothing. After all, nothing will be closer to the skin. Find a manufacturer that truly cares for the environment. You can judge their commitment by their packaging: if the vendor is willing to offer post-consumer packaging, they care about their environmental impact.

6. Choose safe flooring.

Eco-friendly, natural woods and sustainable carpeting contain the fewest chemicals. Use materials like cork, natural linoleum, carpet, and bamboo. These materials are durable, so it will be a while before you need to replace them. Bamboo is especially eco-friendly because it grows quickly and doesn’t require a lot of space. Area rugs made from natural fibers such as jute, sisal, sea-grass, coir, and hemp, have become very popular. If you use conventional carpet, ask the retailer to leave it unrolled in a warehouse for at least a week to air out.

6 Ways Parents Can Prepare to Take a Trip with Baby

tips for traveling with a babyFor many of us, summer is the perfect time for traveling. We get to see our family, experience nature, or spend some time in a warmer climate. Often, families forgo travel because they have a baby with them. Some think it’s too much effort or they won’t have a good time, but that isn’t true! Use these tips to make traveling with a baby simple and care-free.

1. Plan ahead.

Consider the weather during the days of your trip. Make a list of clothing items everyone will need. If you’re driving, plot the course and your stops. Have remedies ready to go when baby becomes fussy in the car seat. Each problem you solve ahead of time is one less you’ll have to deal with.

2. Stock that diaper bag.

For your road trip, pack a few extra diapers and wipes, some toys, a pacifier or lovey, and any feeding items you will want (baby food, spoons, etc). Pack a multi-purpose wrap because it has so many uses; use it for diaper changes, as a burp cloth, a sunshade, stroller blanket, carrier wrap, and car seat cover.

3. Be flexible.

Keep in mind that the baby doesn’t understand your schedule. You have trained your baby to eat, sleep, and play at certain times during the day. He/she is going to maintain that schedule, regardless of your plans. You may have to sit in the back seat for a while to soothe a fussy baby or make an extra stop or two. Remember that the trip with your family is worth the effort.

4. Pack clothes in Ziploc bags.

Use large Ziploc bags to seal up your clothes. When you squeeze the air out of the bag before sealing, you create valuable space in your suitcase for more stuff. Considering how much you’ll need to bring with you, this can reduce the number of bags you need.

5. Avoid “paranoid packing.”

Be realistic about what you think you’ll need on your trip. Thirty-five toys is far too many to lug around, especially if your trip is filled with activities. If you’re staying somewhere with a washer and dryer, don’t overload yourself with clothes.

6. Travel during nap times.

You’ll make the most progresses and have the smoothest journey if you do as much traveling during baby’s nap time as possible. You know your baby’s schedule. Pick a flight that leaves just when your baby is falling asleep. If you’re driving, use this time to jump in the car and put some road behind you.

The wrap is lightweight and breathable so baby is always comfy. Plus, it also gives baby privacy while sleeping and protects him from the other elements like rain and wind.

Products Spotlight – Enter to Win yoomi Self-Warming Bottle

Wee Urban - yoomi giveawayWe’re loving this great baby product that is a self-warming bottle; just press a button and in 60 seconds baby’s milk is warm!

Yoomi – The award winning, self-warming, 3-in-1 baby bottle system.

It comes with one eight-ounce bottle, a warmer, and a charging pod.

Most babies prefer drinking warm milk, but warming their bottles while you’re out of the house can be a challenge. You can heat the bottle briefly in the microwave, but that risks overheating, which can damage the vital nutrients within.

The Yoomi bottle contains a unique warmer that’s activated at the push of a button. This triggers an internal solution to warm in less than a minute. When the bottle is tipped for drinking, your baby’s milk will be gently warmed as it flows through specially designed channels outside of the warmer, so by the time the liquid reaches the nipple, it’s at a natural breast milk temperature. The self-warming baby bottle can stay warm for up to an hour!

The liquid is safe from spoiling because if it isn’t being consumed, it never becomes warm. It remains cool until your baby drinks it. This also saves you from reheating half-finished bottles.

The internal, non-toxic solution is a gel that’s similar to those used in hand warmer packs, so it’s entirely safe. Just in case, they have added a food colorant so leaks are visible and a bitter taste so your baby will immediately stop if he/she accidentally drinks some.

The best part is that the Yoomi can not overheat your babies milk. There is no possible way for it to expose your baby to liquid that’s too hot.

Vents in the nipple ensure that air does not bubble through when your baby drinks, which helps prevent colic.

You can even use the bottle all by itself. It’s lightweight and ergonomically designed, which makes it easy for your baby to hold. The whole unit assembles without you ever having to touch the nipple, which keeps it sterile. The wide mouth makes preparation and cleaning easy. The nipple is a natural breast-shape that’s easy to latch. This is great for helping your baby transition from the breast to the bottle.
