Eight Ways to Travel with your Kids to Keep Calm and “Carry On”

Happy March Break to all! Although we are not heading south this month, I absolutely love traveling with my kids and thought Id share some of my fav tips to keep calm and “carry-on.”

  1. Keep Calm and the Carry On: Kids only get a carry-on bag. Yup- that’s right!  I can’t stress enough how much this can change your life.  When down south, kids spend 90% of this time in their bathing suits and you can recycle several shorts and T’s throughout the week’s duration. (assuming its just for a week). Next, bring your own mini bottle of washing detergent and a scrub brush just in case. Check out this article by The Mommy Insider for her picks for the Best Rolling Bags for Kids.
  1. Pack like a PRO: Keep it simple, and pack darker colored T’s as they will hide the stains, shorts or dresses with pockets, so they can stash some mini cars, cards or poly pockets.  These will provide a small window of entertainment, albeit small, but as parents – we’ll take anything!
  1. Beach Bags for all: Find your kids a small beach bag so they carry their own #*it to the beach. Even if they are still in a stroller, giving them a sense of ownership for the items they want to have at the pool or the beach is a great lesson to instill at any age.
  1. Snack Master:General Mills Cheerioes, as photographed for WikipediaI like to manipulate my kids into having downtime by using snacks- really …really… small… snacks.  Never leave for vacation without 2-3 plastic sandwich bags or a few small Tupperware containers.  At the breakfast area, they’ll be the typical selection of cereals and this is the time to stock up.  Think about it, why give them a single granola bar, when you can give them 100 Cheerios? The smaller the snack, the longer the time it will take your kiddos to consume. Quick, grab the Kobo and everyone relax on those blue beach loungers:)

5. Holy Sheet- Ask your Chambermaid for an extra sheet.  My kids again, love to snack and since they burn so much more energy while on vacation, snacking before breakfast and bedtime is a regular thing for us. Put down the extra sheet over the bed so all the crumbs, cracker bits, and any sand can easily be scooped up and shaken outside. This tip is especially important to avoid all ant and cockroach visitations.

  1. Download: One of my favorite things to do is download a series of songs to help motivate my kids to move faster or head to bed.  My kids love Enya and will tolerate Jazz and Classical music before bed and we carry on with this routine while on vacation.  To create an upbeat vibe, I love to use Score 1 on the Mission Impossible soundtrack. It’s a blast to watch the kids react to the music as they get ready for the day or for family dinner. (Personally, I have this song on my iphone and it’s a track to listen to if you’re in a hurry and need to get a few things at the grocery store- so fun!)
  1. Let there be Light– Kids love to explore so pack a few mini flashlights or even better head lights. We often go bug hunting or for a walk on the beach after dinner, so these really come in handy.  Not to mention you’ll be able to see your kiddos when they run a head of you in the dark.  Try the Coleman venison here available on Amazon. fridayblog-2

8.Tune in and TV Out– As I look back at the few times we have traveled as a family, the moments I treasure the most are when we eat together. It’s a real treat to go to a restaurant without having dozens of TV’s, unnecessary noise and images distracting from the family narrative. To cultivate more of these memories, bring along a few card games, and invest in those mini travel games to keep everyone talking.  “Eye spy with my little eye”, a family that looks connected, happy and rested.  Have a great March Break to all.

Bee-aware and Bee-wear! Why you should know about the “Plight of the honeybee”

Honey Bees have been a staple of suburban gardens for lifetimes on lifetimes, always buzzing around and never really bothering anyone until being bothered themselves. At this point in time, the honey bee is integral to the survival of our agricultural system, and they are slowly but surely dying off.

honeybee-honeycomb-macro_26201_990x742In a 2013 Time Magazine cover article titled “A World Without Bees” Journalist Bryan Walsh delved into the heart of the issues commonly referred to as the “Plight of the Honeybee”
bee-cover-0813

The first line of the feature read, “You can thank the Apis Mellifera, better known as the Western honeybee, for 1 in every 3 mouthfuls of food you’ll eat today.”

Yes the western honeybee is one of the most important animals in the production of the produce that we consume every single day.

Walsh added later, “Honeybees — which pollinate crops like apples, blueberries and cucumbers — are the “glue that holds our agricultural system together,” as the journalist Hannah Nordhaus put it in her 2011 book The Beekeeper’s Lament. (In fact, nearly 70% off all crops that are grown today require pollination.) But that glue is failing. Bee hives are dying off or disappearing thanks to a still-unsolved malady called colony collapse disorder (CCD), so much so that commercial beekeepers are being pushed out of the business.”

425-08-crops-pollinated-by-bees

CCD is based on multiple factors, most are cause by human influence, these are:

  • Pesticides that human’s spray on our crops.
  • Biological Threats like the Varroa mite are killing off colonies directly and spreading deadly diseases.
  • Over-production of commodity crops such as wheat and corn that provide no pollen for honey bees and therefore they are literally starving to death.

img6503p156

The population decrease is so profound in some areas that places that were considered honey bee hotbeds like Iowa, has lost 70% of its population over 6 years. (from 2006-2012)

During that same time period, California, lost nearly half of its honey bee population. And from 2010-2015, the United States has lost 30% of its total honeybee population, and bee colonies are now no longer existent.

Canada is not immune to the problem either, but there are many great organizations fighting to save the bees, including Bees Are Life, which is based right in Toronto. We plan to team up with them in the near future.

Our Bee dress is meant to raise awareness around the plight of the honey bee and hopefully work towards changing it to a more hopeful, rebounding, and rising in population, flight of the honey bee.

Check out the beautiful dress below and pre order soon on our website.

Summer – The Cheapest Time to Get Fit

Young woman wearing armband drinking water

Working out consistently is probably one of the harder things to accomplish, especially as a new parent, or a parent in general, or even just a human.

The winter, in Canada in particular, makes it that much harder to get motivated and get fit. Plus the added pounds around Christmas is a pre-determined kryptonite of New Years resolutions.

Summer however, is the perfect time… We have some tips on what makes summer the best, and cheapest, time to get fit!

Beach Body Motivation

This is a no-brainer. During the summer everyone is constantly reminded by the beach and the abs and the tans. Of course, most of these bodies are unattainable in the short amount of time we have in the summer, but that doesn’t mean they are not a goal you can strive to reach!

The Weather

Another obvious factor… Jogging outside is way more enjoyable than a treadmill. Our suggestion is to find a local trail, and run through the woods. Bring bug spray though. Also, it’s a perfect time to play with your kids outside, that’s technically exercise! My Mom and I used to play badminton in the backyard or go bike riding. Find an active summer activity and do it with the kids!

Less Stress

Summer is often way less stressful. The weather is nicer, the kids aren’t in school, people are laid back and their minds are on a permanent vacation. Great time to make some healthy fruit smoothies and go work out! You can add some other liquid in afterward!

618_348_working-out-hungry-burns-more-fat

Gym’s have deals!

This is the most underrated of them all! Gym’s the most expensive institution ever created (alright not really, but they are not cheap!) usually have deals in the summer. Trial memberships are awesome! Or you can get a free month if you sign up with some friends! So grab a buddy or the hubby and hit the weights… Make sure you stretch!

Alternatively, there are lot more gyms popping up that are lower in price, For example, Fit 4 Less which is a subsidiary of Good Life offers memberships for as low as $9.99 a month! Now that’s cheap.

images

All in all, the sun, the warmth, the lack of stress, all point to summer being the best time to get fit, and hey… judging by weather patterns, the warmth might be extended into October!

From each sale of this specific style of dress, a portion of the proceeds will go to a non-profit organization in support of this fight.
  3. We have a few great cross promotions that we hope to get off the ground for the summer. We are constantly trying to bring in value to add to our brand and sometimes that comes in the form of relationships with other like minded companies. Stay tuned for a great value-added bonus in the future.

Featured Retailer – Dearborn Baby

logo

Dearborn Baby slides into the #2 slot of our featured retailers. These are in no particular order by the way, I’m pretty much picking the first one that pops into my head.

Dearborn is amazing, I can’t say enough good things about this group of amazing people that make up this amazing store. Especially Linda, have you met Linda? No? You should meet Linda, great gal!

View More: http://sweetgrace.pass.us/20151003-the-baby-show

Okay now for the serious stuff that makes Dearborn great.

Range

Seriously just look here at their brands list. This is crazy. They have one of the widest selections I’ve ever seen… and their products range from apparel, to bedding, to strollers to this….

Morals

Dearborn sticks to its guns and continue to promote organic made products where applicable. We love stores that do this and we think its important. Check out their organic options here. And those that are Made in Canada, here.

Big Time – Still small time

Dearborn is pretty massive, I mean you’ve already seen their spread, but they also stay true to their roots. Every year I see them at the Baby Show, interacting with fans and selling like crazy. It’s cool that this grass roots style of spreading the word is still a priority for their company. Wee have tried to continue to do something similar, and we find it quite rewarding and a great chance to interact with our fans.

If you haven’t been to Dearborn Baby, you should… If you have. You should go again. dear_born_baby_store_front

Here’s their location.

A special thank you goes out to Dearborn, we love working with you and we hope to continue doing so.

Featured Retailer – West Coast Kids

We love our retailers! And it’s time to shed light on everything that’s great about them.

This is the first of many upcoming features on Wee Urban retailers.

We start off with our long time partners over at West Coast Kids.

logo

If you live in Alberta or B.C. chances are you already know everything there is to know about West Coast Kids. With 2 stores in Calgary, 1 in Edmonton, another in Richmond, BC. The just about a year old Vancouver location and……

THE BRAND NEW Toronto location! Yes West Coast kids moved East… And we could not be happier to have them in our great city. There grand opening is this weekend! Go check it out!!!

Slider_TO_grandopening

Here are three reasons why we love West Coast Kids, and why you should too!

Selection

I challenge you to find a quality product that West Coast Kids doesn’t carry online or in store. Wee Urban ourselves are in every single West Coast Kids store! Other brands that they carry range from stroller, to car seats, to bedding, to clothing. Everything you need is at West Coast Kids. Including Wee Urban, did we mention that already?

Family Mentality

West Coast Kids is a family run store. E-Children was started by Marsha Dashefsky almost 40 years ago in Winnipeg. In 2007, they went ahead and opened up the mammoth that is West Coast Kids today. With Marsha’s daughter Robyn, fully on board, the flagship store in Richmond started to produce the quality service, advice and products that we all are accustomed to. No matter how large West Coast Kids has became over the last 8 years, the family mentality comes through in their commitment to provide a great service and to keep the best interests of their customers above everything else.

Charity

Not the charity you’re currently thinking. What I’m referring to is the often misused version of charity, which really should just mean, “giving back”. Whether it’s through giveaways (like the one they ran with us in Mid May) or DOTD’s (Deal of the days) where they give 25% of a selected product in their stores and online. WCK is constantly giving back to their loyal customers! Not only is their gear amazing, if you pay attention, it could be free!

West Coast kids is currently offering free shipping on orders over $49.00

You can find our sleep bags in store, and right here

Thank you West Coast Kids for being such an amazing supporter of Wee Urban over the years!

And thank you to all of our fans. We promise to continue to bring you quality products, and be associated with quality stores and people.

FTD – For The Dads – Devin’s Top 5 Beers for St. Paddy’s Day

st-patricks-daySt. Paddy’s is just one of those holidays that really needs to happen on a Friday or Saturday… Don’t ya agree! Well we’re all adults here, so let’s cut to the chase. There’s nothing like an ice cold beer, (or glass of wine, if you’re classy) after a long day with the kids. For me, considering I don’t have kids, let’s call it a long day with my dog, who whines and needs to go outside far too much, and is afraid of the rain, and snow, anyways.

Sometimes you just need a cold one to take the edge off and properly relax. So in the spirit of St. Paddy’s day. Here are my Top 5 Beer choices. We get a little classy, we get a little sassy, and we’re always tasty.

bud-bottles

Budweiser

Ahh, the old classic, the King, as they say. I once heard a comedian say that he doesn’t drink Heneiken, because when you’re at a bar and have had a few too many. “Heneiken” is just too difficult to articulate, so, that’s where Budweiser comes in. Whether you’ve had 2, or 20. You can always say, “Bud”. It’s perfect for St. Paddy’s as it couples a decent flavour at a great price point. But watch out, because Bud is brewed with rice, instead of wheat, the next day headaches are killer… Of course, a trade off most of us are always wiling to make.

clear2.0_2

Sleeman Clear 2.0

Maybe not what you thought was coming, but definitely an option. I’m a fan of strong, crisp beers, but if you’re looking keep the pounds down and not feel bloated from a night of increased hydration, this is by far the best low-calorie option. It still maintains that crisp Sleeman taste, without making you feel like a hot air balloon. I’ve heard many guys say that they don’t want to touch these types of beers, but listen, it does the same job, and if you feel cleaner doing it, then jump right into it. After all, they all taste the same after a while anyways…

MOLSON COORS BREWING COMPANY - Coors Banquet

Coors Banquet

I guess we can call this the College Beer. There’s just something about Coors Banquet that makes me feel nostalgic, and it is the only beer that I prefer in a can. Call me crazy but I’m not a fan of Coors Light, but the Banquet understands me. It’s golden can, and even more golden taste, make me feel like I’m in Los Angeles watching the Kings beat the Capitals (true story), or I’m back at home, in my childhood bedroom with my mini-fridge stacked with little golden babies. Plus, I personally think it tastes great, and a good can option is always better than a bottle when travelling.

ML Can with Glass

Miller Lite/MGD

Like I mentioned, I’m not a huge fan of light beer, thankfully, I am a fan of Lite beer, (see what I did there, spellcheck is saying it’s spelled wrong) Anyways, Miller Lite is finally in Canada, and that is great news for anyone who likes light beer with good taste. It goes down smooth and easy, and is incredibly affordable. You won’t know what hit you. An honourable mention must go out to it’s ancestor… MGD, those clear bottles, they are just beautiful. Aren’t they?

Guinness-original-logo.svg

Guiness

Well, it’s not St. Paddy’s without being genuinely Irish… and there is nothing more Irish, other than Potato’s, than Guiness. It is probably the only beer I’ve ever enjoyed that I cannot see through, and to honour its tradition, and to not hurt my pocket book, it is a St. Paddy’s only beverage. It doesn’t matter what you’re drinking on March 17th. You have to at least pour one of these out for ol’ St. Patrick!

This beerly beloved blog is brought to you by Wee Urban’s own, Devin Sarges. A constant supporter of the Toronto St. Pats/Maple Leafs – I know. I really do know.
