Introducing the pink flamingo sleep bag (and the story behind

In the four years we’ve been making sleep bags, we’ve only ever produced them in gender neutral designs and colours. It simply makes more ‘cents’ – because well-made, neutral ‘staples’ suit everybody and can be passed down to an unlimited number of children. You simply can’t go wrong.

But I couldn’t get over my urge to create a pink one. So… I finally did. And it hits our shelves next month. Since this product breaks the mold a little – and is quite near and dear to me personally – I thought I’d share the inspiration behind it.

Cozy Basics Pink Flamingo

Cozy Basics Pink Flamingo

There are two main reasons why I felt so compelled to go in this direction:

  1. I don’t have a girl. But I love girly things. Since there are no more children in my future – two boys are more than enough, thank you very much! – I figure my design work is the perfect place to get my feminine ‘fix’, so to speak. And you can’t get more girly than pink-on-pink.
  2. To pay homage to my mom, Carol. Firstly, she’s a breast cancer survivor, which has an obvious tie-in with the pink. She also always wore pearls – and a fantastic pink dress – whenever she got dressed up, which inspired both the specific colour of this product – and the pearls around mama flamingo’s neck.  I love adding personal touches into the design process!

3. Speaking of pink – you might be interested to know that pink is a very difficult colour to choose and get just right. I selected a nice saturated dusty pink pantone, which happens to be hot right now – and very similar to my mom’s special dress.

Needless to say, this is a product that has deep personal meaning for me. I had a GREAT time designing it – and would be lying if I said I didn’t love the finished product.

The first step in the design process is a digital mock-up like the one below. From there, I have samples created in every size so I can see them live and make sure all is as it should be. Then, once we’re 100% sure everything looks great, it goes into production. The whole process for a design like this one – where we’re creating a new version of an existing product and artwork – takes about eight months.

The pink flamingo will be available in sizes X through Y, at a cost of $38 +tax, making them a fantastic gift for that special baby girl in your life. They’ll be available for pre-order through our site on February 15th, and in stores shortly thereafter. If you have any questions at all about this product – or any others – give us a shout. Happy shopping!

Black Friday- What’s the Dealio?

It takes a lot of work, but here at the office, Wee love Black Friday.  Its like spring cleaning for businesses, or like finally getting time to unclutter that junk drawer with all your batteries, buttons and countless screws leftover from your Ikea project- lol.  We love to go through our inventory, put great products on sale as we make room for new styles. Then in just a few short months, there comes a sense of newness and excitement as we unpack latest shipment of our new prints for the Made In Canada Line-2017.

Next, comes the best part, when the phone rings and we can help customers better understand our brand and the features or our products.  What a pleasure it is to speak with new moms and to be honest, just talk on the phone!  Imagine that- talking!   While speaking with our new customer base, we also love to share what other great deals are out there.  Check this Sale Directory out put on by  MamaLoupsDen and ThisWestcoast Mommy!

Why ‘Made in Canada’ matters

I’ve always been proud to be Canadian – but never more so than on November 11, 2001.

I was in France backpacking while teaching overseas and, on a whim, a bunch of Canadian women and I decided to take a ferry to Calais to see Vimy Ridge. We navigated through a small town and stumbled upon a Remembrance Day ceremony. The fact that we were there on November 11 was completely un-intentional but the most fitting co-incidence.

We watched as the French vets marched down the street and played their anthem. Next came the Canadian anthem as our flag rose up the pole – and I was completely overcome. With patriotism. With pride. With appreciation.

At the end of the ceremony, one of the French veterans came over and said “our boys would be so proud to have you Canadian gals here.” I’ll never forget that day or how I felt – thinking about his aged face, the stories he would have told, the legacy he would one day leave behind…still wells me up.stuffsss2

When I started WeeUrban many years later, making my products in Canada was really important to me – and remains so to this day. I’m proud that I can help support the local economy, that my kids can see where my products are made and walk freely on the floor of the factory. That our manufacturers (many of whom I consider family at this point) are safe and treated fairly – something workers in many parts of the world can’t count on, sadly.

As I run my business and go about my life as a busy Mom, I work hard to remember how lucky we are to live in this free and peaceful country – and that we have this privilege because of those who fought on our behalf decades ago, in that place I stumbled upon all those years ago.

stuffsss222On November 11, I make a point to be particularly grateful – and I hope you will too. As for WeeUrban, we’ll continue to make in Canada for as long as there is the opportunity and available resources to do so. I hope that’s forever, and thanks to those that have stuck with us.

Outfitting the Kids: How Parents can save on School Clothes

Outfitting the Kids How Parents can Save on School Clothes

Between book bags, lunchboxes, shoes, and a nearly endless list of school and classroom supplies, back to school shopping can really add up. In addition to the initial costs, kids just keep growing, so school clothes typically have to be replenished throughout the year. Below are some easy ways parents can save on school clothes this year and get the best deals.

Shop Used

Shopping consignment shops or yard sales can help drastically reduce your bill, while still allowing you to get cute and high quality clothes. Consignment shopping has increased significantly in popularity, as families seek to save money and benefit the environment. If you are interested, there is likely a consignment shop in your area and there are also many reputable online shops that sell quality used clothing at a fraction of the cost of new.
Take Advantage of Coupons and Sales
Many stores offer deep discounts, online deals, and coupons to loyal customers. Take advantage of these sales and coupons. If you need coupons for a certain store and have already used yours, ask around with friends. Swapping coupons is a great way to help ensure everyone gets coupons they can best use. Don’t throw away unused coupons or go shopping at your favorite store without some on hand. The internet and social media have made coupon swapping even easier and more convenient. Sites like Discountrue also offer brand name discounts like coupons and more.
Think Gender Neutral When Appropriate
If you have multiple children, hand-me-downs can be a huge help when it comes to saving money. Unfortunately, if you have children of the opposite gender, the opportunities to pass clothes down are much fewer. Think ahead and try to buy gender neutral when appropriate. Most clothing available is gendered one way of the other, but other items such as rain slickers, snow pants, and mud boots can easily be gender neutral and passed down from boy to girl or vice versa.
Make a List
Though typically thought of when going to the grocery store, making lists can be just as beneficial to the school shopper. It is easy to get sucked into the vortex of school supplies and clothes and over-buy on certain items while forgetting others. If you have children shopping with you, it can become a free-for-all as they toss things into the cart. Having a disciplined approach and a list that needs checked off can make shopping less chaotic and less expensive.

Back to school time is full of change, excitement, and apprehension for many kids and families. Trying to make school shopping fun and special for kids without breaking your wallet can be difficult, but not impossible. Keep your eyes open for deals and be creative with how and where you spend your money.

5 Tips on What You Can Do to Make Your Baby #SunHappy

Oh Summer, how you take so long to get here, and leave so quick.

Despite Summer’s quick exit, we all seem to somehow manage to get ourselves a little sunburnt during its brief but smouldering appearance. It’s imperative that our little ones are fully protected from the Sun’s harmful rays, and the heat. So with your help, we have compiled a list of 5 tips that will be sure to help out any new parents.

#1) Shade

Sounds like a no brainer, but it isn’t. Shade is where baby should be at all times. If there is a case where natural shade is not available, it can be manufactured. When carrying the little one around in the park. Check out the new brand Shaidee, and learned how to keep them covered!

#2) Long Sleeves

Naturally, one would think Summer means short sleeves, but in a baby’s case, it’s completely indifferent. In fact, long sleeved Rompers and Onesies made from breathable fabrics like Bamboo Cotton, make your lives as parents, that much easier. If you follow step #1, and your baby is in the shade, it will be cooler there. A long sleeve/long pant option doesn’t seem like they’re going to be melting in it. Furthermore, it protects from the Sun, and you don’t have to put sunscreen on their arms or legs. And don’t forget about mosquitos! Long sleeves always help when dealing with pests like that!

Now for some shameless self promotion of Long Sleeved breathable rompers – Wee Urban

#3) Hydrate

The Sun does a lot more to us than just burning our skin, it also dehydrates us from the overwhelming heat. It is so important to keep your baby hydrated when outside. Not only with water, and formula when feeding. But also, electrolytes need to be mixed in as well. These will hydrate them and can be found in many fruits and fruit juices, but especially Bananas. Bananas are high in Potassium which is an essential electrolyte for getting blood moving and keep the body fully hydrated.

#4) Hydrate More

Hydration isn’t just needed inside the body, the Sun dries out your babies skin as well. Here is a list from the Fans of Wee Urban of the best available moisturizers on the market per what they use.

  • Babyganics
  • Johnson & Johnson’s
  • Green Beaver
  • Baby Sun Care Creme by Substance Matter
  • Mustela
  • Earth Mama Angel
  • Delish Naturals lotion.
  • Coconut Oil
  • Vaseline and Glaxal Base Mix

Basic Signs to Teach Your Baby Before They Can Talk

Basic Signs to Teach Your Baby Before They Can TalkDespite the fact that your baby can’t form sentences yet, they can most certainly learn basic sign language. When you become a parent, any type of communication with your child is vital, which means teaching them different signs can make a huge difference. Also, a baby’s understanding of language and motor skills develop faster than their ability to speak. Here are some basic signs to teach your child before they’re able to talk:

If you can teach your child the ability to show you when they’re hungry or thirsty, this will definitely come in handy before they are able to tell you. Using the hand motion of hand to mouth with a tilting motion should be good enough for you to understand that your little one is in need of some sustenance.

This is also a sign that will save you from temper tantrums or crying fits as you will know exactly how to help your baby when they show you.

The ability to show your child that something is too hot will provide a great preventative measure for their safety. This will not only allow you to show them something that shouldn’t be touched because it’s too hot, but it also lets your child show you when something is too hot for them to eat or touch.

This motion can be shown to them by putting your hand out or touching something, and then quickly withdrawing it.

Another great and simple sign language movement you can teach your child is asking them where something is. By shrugging your shoulders and holding your palms out, you can show the little one that you’re unsure of where something is located. This can be helpful when you take your eyes off of them for a while and need to know where they’re hiding something.

Thumbs Up

The thumbs up and down signs are universal signs for indicating whether you like or dislike something. Due to this, the thumbs up sign would certainly be beneficial to teach your child before they are able to speak. If your little one can tell you what they like or don’t like without even speaking a word, this could be of monumental help as you’re raising them.

Since this sign is understandably more difficult for a child to pick up and understand, try to use the thumbs up as often as possible. Anytime you notice your baby enjoying a certain food or having fun with a toy, indicate a thumbs up each time!

2 kids, 42 hours in the car and Im still smiling?

2 kids, 30 pit stops, 42 hours of driving and 1 amazing road trip-

I do love a good road trip, but with a 2.5 year old, who is in the middle of potty training, and an active 4.5 year old, that never stops talking, we knew we were in for a real treat.  We had planned this trip for a couple of months and were determined to do it unplugged- that’s right, NO DVD, NO IPAD, NO IPHONE  (o.k…just a little, but just keep reading to see where I cracked) and NO BATTERY OPERATED, PORTABLE ENTERTAINERS! After all, our parents did it! So, I was determined to suck it up and travel Ol,skool style!  Ten days later, we’re back, somewhat rested and we decided to post our best moments, memories and our top 10 – Serenity and Survival Guide for the Summer Road Trip!

#1 Map the Silence-

My oldest never stops talking! Seriously.  Rather than have the proverbial “Are we there yet?” plague our trip, I printed out a small map of our route, highlighted it in yellow and stuck it on the backs of our headrests.  We placed a star on Toronto and a picture of Grandma on Halifax.  Every time we took a pit stop, the kids got a sticker to put on the map. To make it real interesting, they got a tattoo, if they went pee!

#2 “Enya” better enjoy nap time-

Yes, we played games, sang a lot of songs and even made some up along the way. A road trip is a great opportunity to introduce your kids to different types of music.  My kids love Motown, but we brought some country, classical, folk, the obvious kids Cd’s and Enya for nap time!  We loooooooooved ENYA!

Don’t forget to pick up some postcards and mail them home. Writing these as you wait for dinner in a restaurant is great tool to kill time and keeps the hungry monsters at bay.  Besides that, the kids were totally excited to see their mail!  I often wonder if my children will know of that amazing feeling when getting a hand written note or letter in the mail- but that’s for another blog entry:)

#3- Become the Snack Master:

While my amazing husband drove, I was busy in the   passenger seat making “magical” mixes of nuts, berries, dried fruits with the occasional jelly bean.  O.k, there were many jellybeans….:)  I was happily referred to as the “Snack Master”.  At my feet were a bunch of options and two bags of microwaved popcorn- the silence during snack time was golden!

#4 – Honk, Honk!

Now this probably wouldn’t go over as well with a car full of girls, but I got tired of counting all the car haulers and bumblebee cars and needed a challenge. So, each time we passed an 18 wheeler I motioned to the driver to honk his horn.  A simple pump fist and pull soon become a game that lasted the entire  42 hour drive.  Now, even back in the city limits, my little guy says, “mommy do it, mommy do it!”

#5 – Fight guys with Fries!

Oh, the kicking of the seat! Is this not the most annoying habit of the toddler?  In the midst of a “Bend it like Beckham session” I had an epiphany, to fight guys with fries by taking away their french fries. : Ya kick my seat- it’ll cost you a fry! Worked like a charm!

Score: Jacob 8, Zach 14

#6- Love Thy Neighbor-

After a long day of driving and entertaining, it was time to find the hotel and sleep. Yeah, right. Our boys had never slept in the same bed before and WOW this was a challenge. After the second night, I got schooled. I bought two flashlights and sent Jacob and Daddy out to hunt for “native” night crawlers and wild game, while mommy put the little one to bed.

#7 – Take the road less  travelled

Although it makes complete sense to take the fastest routes,     there was so much more to see on the back roads.  We stopped for potatoes, corn,     blueberries and took a small pit stop for this shot!  How could we resist-“ Mom it’s the Green Goblin’s Motorcycle”!  We took     ferries to divide the time up and that was worth every penny. No whales though.

#8- The rewards:

O.k, so, I did slip up and I used the iphone to play a short 15 minute Diego episode.  They were both so good in the car that day, I just couldn’t help it.  I also knew that my husband bought a bottle of wine and the chances of us actually having a drink and not falling asleep were far greater if they watched TV in the car and not at the hotel.  After all you got to do, what you got to do, right?

#9 –Making memories:

You know that spot? The one you always stop at for ice cream when leaving the beach or cottage?  Or that market you always go in for the raisin bread, cinnamon rolls or homemade lollipops?  Or better yet, that fish and chip place off Peggy’s Cove?

On the way to my cottage, the place where I spent most of my summer holidays, I couldn’t wait to take them to the Ben’s Bakery Outlet Store for molasses cookies.   It’s the one stop that you just need to make, whether its the first or the last trip to the cottage. Seriously, a dozen of these babies and a litre of ice cold milk and I’m at the spa!

#10- Disconnect to reconnect:

I guess it all depends on the nature of your kids as to how challenging or exhausting a road trip may become. Either way, it was a blast and I challenge every parent to leave the portable entertainers and DVD’s off for as long as you can!

Cheers boys, to a great trip and mom’s first blog entry.  Happy Long Weekend Everyone!
