6 Unique Gift Ideas for the Next Baby Shower You Attend

Expectant moms and dads are often inundated with well-intentioned, yet redundant shower gifts. When you want to your gift to be truly appreciated, you can show your happiness for their new arrival and also show that you want to help them with their upcoming role as parents by showing up with one of these unique shower gifts in hand.
Trendy Baby Clothing

New parents always appreciate clothing for their little one. Rather than gift the standard colorful onesie or footed sleeper, you can give them a set of clothing that is trendy, stylish, and fun from places like Shop Sugar Babies. Clothing that is emblazoned with their favorite sports team logo or embroidered with cute designs will give the new parents something fun and beautiful to dress their baby in later.

(Wee Urban edit – Wee Urban has some amazing trendy clothes too) :)
Baby Bullet

Adults today are crazy about making their own smoothies. With the Baby Bullet, they can also make their baby a fresh smoothie that contains their little one’s favorite fruits and veggies. With more parents getting away from feeding their babies processed baby food, the Baby Bullet can be the ideal shower gift.

Baby Cry Analyzer

Even the most experienced of parents may have no idea why their baby is crying. They can know for sure when you give them an innovative Baby Cry Analyzer, as found from this Buzzfeed post. It shows them if their baby is hungry, sleepy, colicky, or experiencing other distresses.

Stroller Storage Organizer

Moms know what a hassle it can be to carry a purse while pushing a stroller. When you show up with a stroller storage organizer in hand, you relieve this mom’s future frustration at being unable to keep her purse up on her shoulder while pushing the stroller. The organizer fits over a stroller’s handles and has enough room for a phone, bill fold, and other essentials.

Battery Operated Nail Cutter

New moms and dads dread cutting their babies’ nails. You can make it easier for them by giving them a battery operated nail cutter. This cutter uses gentle motions to cut a baby’s nails and helps avoid painful cuts and tears.

Baby Barolo Cocoon

Babies love to be swaddled, but few parents actually master the blanket swaddling technique. You can help new moms and dads keep their little one swaddled by giving them a Baby Barolo cocoon. This blanket keeps Baby cocooned and happy.

Choosing unique and thoughtful shower gifts can be a challenge. You can help new parents out with these innovative and meaningful baby presents.

Beauty and Cosmetics during Pregnancy: The Good and the Bad

0206931

Every pregnant woman wants to look her best during her pregnancy, but it is hard to use the same makeup you used before you got pregnant. Pregnancy changes your body chemistry, the composition of your skin and the way your body looks in the light. Your makeup, fragrances and skincare regimen all must change during your pregnancy, and you may find they will stay changed after you have your baby.
How Your Makeup Reacts to Your Skin

The makeup you normally use may not react to your face as it always has. The color you use on your face may not look the same as it has in the past, and these colors may not stay on your face as they once had. It is possible that your makeup will cause you to break out in hives, or you may form a rash. You should consider changing your foundation, blush and powder during your pregnancy. The change in your body chemistry may require you to maintain this change in your makeup after you have your baby.

Skincare

The skincare products you use may not give you the same results they once did. You are counting on your lotions and moisturizers to protect your skin, but these lotions may not do the job they once did. You cannot continue to use the same moisturizer if it does not help you, and your skin may dry out much faster than it would otherwise.

Your skincare regimen may need to increase when you are pregnant. Chronically dry skin is going to plague you when you are pregnant, and you may consider using more moisturizer than you did in the past. Many women resort to moisturizing their whole bodies every day, and you must keep up with this routine to prevent stretch marks. Do as much as you can to keep your skin moist and soft.
Sunscreen

A woman who is not accustomed to wearing sunscreen may need to start using sunscreen during her pregnancy. Your olive complexion may have helped you a good bit at the beach, but you must start wearing sunscreen because your skin is so much more sensitive.

Women who do not typically use sunscreen may turn to a foundation that has sun protection built-in. You need to keep your skin from being damaged in the hot sun, and you must take steps that will prevent sunburn and sun damage.

Skin Irritation

You may go to bed with your makeup on after a long day, and your skin has never reacted poorly to your makeup. You must start washing your face every evening to ensure your skin is safe. You will likely feel a good bit of irritation when you leave your makeup on for too long, and you may need to use a professional makeup remover.

Daily Makeup Application

You should change from pads to sponges when you apply your makeup, and you may consider scaling back the amount of makeup you are putting on every day. Reduce the amount of makeup you are using to help your skin cope with your pregnancy. Your pregnancy is going to make your skin reject a good bit of your makeup, and the makeup that you choose to wear going forward should be as light as possible.

Your body will not respond well to all the makeup you typically wear. You must make a change that is going to help you look your best during your pregnancy. You may choose to keep these makeup changes after you have your baby, but you must make careful changes for the health of your skin. If you are unsure about certain cosmetic products while you are pregnant, it is wise to consult with a physician like Dr. Gilbert Webb, to see what is safe for you.

Wee Urban Pre Sleep Analysis: Cozy Basics v.s. Wee Dreams Premium Brand

BOTS

The age old debate between our two sleep bag brands has made even the strongest of our employees cringe and go hoarse at trade shows and cause carpal tunnel over email.

Today we settle the debate, but mainly, we let you know that whichever one you choose, you really can’t go wrong.

We will compare and contrast both by looking into 3 main categories, which are: fabric, construction and location/price point.

Fabric:

Cozy Basics:

This sleep bag features an 80/20 cotton – polyester blend. 80% cotton, 20% polyester. The fabric has been tried and tested to meet Health Canada’s Flammability and Safety Standards for Children’s Sleepwear. It also complies SA CPSC and ASTM standards and requirements. Not only will your child be safe, he/she will sleep better and will not overheat. The breathability of the fabric allows the sleep bag to be used all year round, you just add layers underneath in the winter and subtract layers in the summer depending on how hot your baby sleeps.

Wee Dreams:

This sleep bag features a cotton and bamboo blend that guarantees your child will absolutely adore going to sleep at night. Think of your favourite sweater since high school, that you have washed the living crap out of and it’s still softer than ever. This is what this sleep bag is like. You can wash it as many times as you’d like and it will never lose its softness. Your baby will not overheat as the cotton/bamboo is breathable and again if you add or subtract layers based on season, it’s a 12 months a year sleep bag.

Construction:

CB:

The intention of both of our sleep bag lines is to be worn over your baby’s regular sleepwear. We also took a couple of steps to ensure your baby gets exactly the sleep they need every night. For their benefit, and for yours. The CB line features a dual zipper that allows for easy access to their feet. You don’t even need to take them fully out of the bag and you can change their diaper. The zipper that crosses the chest allows easy access for you, and the guard prevents baby from removing it themselves. The generous length of our bags allows for extended use as well.

WD:

The main difference here is the addition of the 3 snaps with the premium brand. They are lead and nickel free and in many cases allow for even more flexibility when it comes to changing. They lay out completely flat like a blanket and you are able to change your kid with ease. Many find the snaps quicker for on/off, however sometimes as the baby gets older, they have the ability to remove the snaps themselves! Sneaky lil ones!

Location/Price Point:

CB:

In the case of our sleep bags, the location of where they are made is integral to you in many cases. The Cozy Basics brand is made overseas in China. For a more price conscious family, we suggest this one. As its manufacturing location and price of production allows us to retail it for $38.00 which is a bargain when it comes to the quality of bag you are getting. We thoroughly vet our contacts in China and know that they follow the best-practice guidelines for production. They are safely made, and the ethics that we hold standard are being met.

WD:

With the Wee Dreams, it is a different story. Proudly made in Canada, our original sleep bag line has fabric trucked in from the North and printed, cut and sewed right here in Ontario. Unfortunately, Canadian production is a massive challenge in the current economic landscape of our great country. We continue to strive to provide you with a great homemade product, that retails for a reasonable $49.99 for the bottom 2 sizes and $54.99 for the 18-36. Despite the high cost of production, we have managed to keep costs as low as possible, so if you’re ethically conscious and love a great made in Canada product, buy a Wee Dreams!

Check out this image for a detailed look at our cozy basics sleep bags.

sleepbagsizingV3

All of our sleep bags are available in 0-6, 6-18, 18-36.

Cozy Basics features: Natural Giraffe, Green Owl, Aqua Elephant, Grey Penguin and Natural Fox.

Wee Dreams features: Aqua Giraffe, Green Owl, Taupe Elephant and Pink Peacock.

3 Key Ways Pets Influence Children

A Wee Urban Guest Blog from Melissa Stevens!

Raising a child may be the most fulfilling process a human can experience, but it is truly based on a bittersweet mixture of events and emotions. Of course, the bitter part emerges from all the worries and anxiety that being responsible for another (helpless) human being can cause. The sweet part comprises all the beautiful moments that make up parenthood. If a parent wants to make a child’s upbringing even more interesting and colorful, getting a pet is a fabulous way to do it. Pets affect children’s development in an extraordinarily beneficial way.

altattribute

Boosting Imagination

One of the most important things that should be encouraged while a child is growing is the development of imagination. The evolution of the cognitive part of the child’s brain should be boosted from the earliest age. Sure, reading stories and playing with your child will give incentive to the development of both kinesthetic and mental skills, but if you add a pet to this cognition-boost set, the outcome will be even better. You can introduce different pets to your child and encourage him or her to become interested in them, as well as develop a higher level of empathy. In addition, reading to them about animals will help bolster your child(ren)’s imagination even more. As they get older, they will develop a life-long, animal-friendly attitude.

Stronger Family Bonds

Many families have problems when it comes to spending time together, but a pet can turn the things upside down and give birth to a special bond within your family. Instead of staring at TV every night of the week, you could spend at least a couple of nights playing with the pet and teaching your child how to treat it in the best way. Also, such occasions are a great opportunity to create a sense of togetherness, and teach your child that many things can be done more easily if all the family members participate. It could be mere dog/cat brushing, but you could also be something more involved, like a flea and tick or cleaning up after the pet, to introduce your child(ren) to some less pleasant duties that come with pet owning.

altattribute

Pet-Related Duties For Better Working Habits

A child can be brought up in many ways and every mother develops and applies some special rules of her own. But making a pet become a part of your child’s life usually has one common effect in most of the pet-having families – they become organized in a better way. Smaller pets, like tortoises and budgies are not that demanding, so they could be very attractive first pets for the beginning of your child’s active pet-owning life. For starters, kids will learn to feed them on a regular basis and become aware that animals also need emotional approval from their owners. Perhaps once children learn those skills, they may be ready for a cat or a dog. That way they will be taught that a larger pet causes more responsibility, just as it is the case with real life.

It is clear that a great bond can be established between a pet and a child, but every parent should understand that only with their help will children be able to develop special feelings for pets, and learn how to behave towards pets (and people) in an appropriate way. A pet can be great fun for the entire family, but it also requires a lot of care and attention, just like a child.

Holiday Sleep Routine Tips to Stay on Track

Holiday Sleep Routine TipsThis is my favorite time of year. I love all things holiday, so it just puts me in a good mood to see decorations, to hear different music, and to do special things as a family. When I speak with parents of little ones, the joy of the upcoming season is often filled with a little bit of nervousness and angst as they consider how the holidays may affect their little one’s sleep. Here are some tips to help manage your child’s sleep during the holidays so that they really can be happy.

1. Plan Ahead to Be Well-Rested

Take a look at your holiday calendar. Are there events that will interfere with your child’s naps and bedtime? If so, do your best to make sure that you can keep your child well-rested in the days leading up to and after these special events. A well-rested child will be more adaptable and flexible. Whenever possible, schedule activities around your child’s sleep schedule so that they will not be overtired once it is time for fun. Try to travel earlier in the day so that you can reach your destination before bedtime and introduce your child to their new sleep environment.

2. Bring the trash with you

If you are traveling this holiday season, you may find yourself staying with family in a guest room.  That guest room may or may not have curtains or shades, and it may not be dark enough for your child to sleep well. No problem! Throw some black trash bags and painters tape into your suitcase just in case you are faced with a super bright room.  The trash bags will block out the unwanted light and the painters tape will leave no marks when you take the bags down at the end of your visit.

3. Be creative in finding places to sleep

Sharing sleeping space with little ones isn’t always easy, so sometimes it helps to improvise with where your child sleeps. Take a look around.  Is there a large walk-in closet that can serve as a place for your child to camp out? Of course, it’s important to make sure these areas are baby or kid-proofed before placing a pack n play, mattress, or sleeping bag inside. Make sure the area is well ventilated and has access to heat if you are in a cold climate.

My children have slept in walk-in closets and enclosed lanais when visiting family. We used a clothesline and large pieces of felt fabric to create a “kid cave” so that they had a separate sleeping area that was also dark and away from other noise in the home. When staying in a hotel, consider bringing a clothesline and an extra sheet with you so that you can create a more private sleeping area for your child.

4. Leave Sleep Training for Another

Time Nobody wants to have a child that doesn’t sleep well when they travel or visit with family, but be realistic about your expectations. When sleep training, it’s important to be as consistent as possible with your child’s sleep environment and the timing of sleep. It’s just not practical to sleep train and expect your child to improve their sleep habits while you are traveling or if you are off-schedule.

The same may be true if you are hosting guests at your home. Sleep train a few weeks before your trip or wait until after you return. You will have a better chance of success and you will enjoy your trip and visitors so much more.

5. Have fun!

The holidays do not occur every day, so if your schedule gets a little funky, that’s okay! Get right back to basics once the holidays are over. If you really get off track, there may be a few nights of reinforcing expectations, but most children don’t forget how to sleep well as long as you are consistent and go back to doing what you were before the interruptions. Have a great time this holiday season and to all, a good night!

Tips for Getting Your Child to Sleep in His Room

get your child to sleep in his own roomIt can happen quickly. You let your child sleep in your room one night since they can’t fall asleep, and now they are sleeping in your room more than they are sleeping in their own. Once this happens, it can be hard to get your child to go back and sleep in their own room. Don’t fear, you will get your bed back! Here are five tips for getting your child to sleep in their room:

1) Use positive language.

After five nights of restless sleep, you are more than ready to get your child back into their own bed. However exhausted you may be, it is important that you use positive language over negative language. Say to your child “You are so big! A big kid gets to sleep in their own room. You are so lucky!” This will go over much better with your child than, “You shouldn’t be sleeping in our bed at your age.”

2) Figure out why they want to sleep in your room.

If your child is sleeping in your room most nights, there is a reason. To solve this problem you need to figure out what is causing it. Ask them why they don’t like sleeping in their own room. If they are afraid of the dark, put a night light in their room. Do they feel like they don’t get as much attention as their sibling? Work on giving them more attention during the day. Once you solve why they are sleeping in your room, you can help solve the bigger issue.

3) Use stuffed animals.

Some kids just don’t like sleeping alone. There is a simple solution to this, stuffed animals. Let your child pick out a cute and cozy stuffed animal that makes them feel comfortable. Once they have something to sleep with at night they will stop sneaking into your bed.

4) Have patience.

We know that after a while this will be frustrating. The best thing you can do for yourself is to remain patient with your child. If you start acting frustrated with them, they will only become more nervous. Be kind and gentle with them, after all they are still little.

5) Be firm.

Although walking your child back to bed at 3am is annoying, it’s worth it. Whenever your child comes to sleep in bed with you, walk them back to their own room. Lay down with them in their bed until they fall asleep if you have to. Being tired the next day because you got out of bed will be worth it in the long run. Eventually your child won’t be coming to your room in the middle of the night.

6 Tips for Getting Your Toddler to Stay In Bed

toddler sleep tipsToddlers are sweet, active, special, and they amaze us every day. But some of them love to test us and fight sleep. For every toddler who goes to sleep peacefully there are a handful who try to negotiate, delay, or stall. There are so many parents who struggle with the bedtime process that I’m here to share some helpful information with you. Use these six tips to help create a solid bedtime process so your toddler will stay in bed.

Tip #1: Make your bedtime routine fun:

Be careful not to rile your toddler up before bedtime, but do things that will help them enjoy the bedtime process.

Try having fun throughout the bedtime process:

  • Sing silly songs while brushing teeth.
  • Have a race to get into pajamas.
  • Play a fun game as part of your bedtime routine (I Spy, Rhyme words, Simon Says).

Tip #2: Teach your child what is expected of them:

As parents we sometimes expect a lot from our children. So much, that we forget that a few short years ago, they were just a tiny little newborn that you were rocking to sleep. We have to realize that as much as we would like LOVE for our kids to oblige everything we do and say, they are just young kids whose minds run a mile a minute. By understanding that going through a bedtime routine isn’t always fun or easy for some toddlers — we can help make it easier and more fun by thinking about things from a child’s perspective.

Tip #3: Set Sleep Rules:

Does your toddler really know what it means to go to sleep? Ask them. It would be great to hear the different responses. Assuming your toddler is out of a crib and transitioned to a big bed – your child’s big room allows them a lot of freedom and of course some would choose to play rather than go to sleep. If you are struggling on a nightly basis to get your child to sleep, get back to basics. Have a family meeting and explain the rules of sleep and how sleep works.

You lay in your bed, shut your eyes and go to sleep.” (yes that simply)

Explain in your child’s language the benefits of sleep and how it helps them grow big and strong and spend more time (playing at the park, running fast, etc.).

Tip #4: Eliminate the power struggle:

You are the parent and you set the rules and the time that your toddler goes to sleep. But, giving options and picking your battles you eliminate a full on power struggle and will make your bedtime routine much more enjoyable (for both you). Provide options throughout the bedtime process to help empower your child:

  • Would you like to wear these pajamas or these?
  • Would you like to brush your teeth before or after bath?
  • Would you like to pick your books or should I?

Tip #5: Offer Rewards for Following the Sleep Rules:

Use a sticker chart to help reward your toddler for following the sleep rules. Have they stayed in their bed the whole night? Could they earn a shiny sticker? Get your child invested in the process by having them help make the chart (or pick out an online printable). Include them in shopping and picking out the stickers.

Tip #6: Blame Somebody Else:

Going to sleep is not always your toddler’s favorite subject and if your child is still resistant to the act of going to sleep, I give you permission from this point on to blame me. Tell them that you have a friend that is going to help you follow your sleep rules. This will help you not look like the bad guy and hopefully your child wants to do what Sleep Susie says.

Share your success!

So who’s ready to make some changes to help set the framework for your toddler’s sleep? By following some of these tips they will help with implementing changes so your toddler can sleep better at night (without the battles). Good luck!
