6 Unique Gift Ideas for the Next Baby Shower You Attend

Expectant moms and dads are often inundated with well-intentioned, yet redundant shower gifts. When you want to your gift to be truly appreciated, you can show your happiness for their new arrival and also show that you want to help them with their upcoming role as parents by showing up with one of these unique shower gifts in hand.
Trendy Baby Clothing

New parents always appreciate clothing for their little one. Rather than gift the standard colorful onesie or footed sleeper, you can give them a set of clothing that is trendy, stylish, and fun from places like Shop Sugar Babies. Clothing that is emblazoned with their favorite sports team logo or embroidered with cute designs will give the new parents something fun and beautiful to dress their baby in later.

(Wee Urban edit – Wee Urban has some amazing trendy clothes too) :)
Baby Bullet

Adults today are crazy about making their own smoothies. With the Baby Bullet, they can also make their baby a fresh smoothie that contains their little one’s favorite fruits and veggies. With more parents getting away from feeding their babies processed baby food, the Baby Bullet can be the ideal shower gift.

Baby Cry Analyzer

Even the most experienced of parents may have no idea why their baby is crying. They can know for sure when you give them an innovative Baby Cry Analyzer, as found from this Buzzfeed post. It shows them if their baby is hungry, sleepy, colicky, or experiencing other distresses.

Stroller Storage Organizer

Moms know what a hassle it can be to carry a purse while pushing a stroller. When you show up with a stroller storage organizer in hand, you relieve this mom’s future frustration at being unable to keep her purse up on her shoulder while pushing the stroller. The organizer fits over a stroller’s handles and has enough room for a phone, bill fold, and other essentials.

Battery Operated Nail Cutter

New moms and dads dread cutting their babies’ nails. You can make it easier for them by giving them a battery operated nail cutter. This cutter uses gentle motions to cut a baby’s nails and helps avoid painful cuts and tears.

Baby Barolo Cocoon

Babies love to be swaddled, but few parents actually master the blanket swaddling technique. You can help new moms and dads keep their little one swaddled by giving them a Baby Barolo cocoon. This blanket keeps Baby cocooned and happy.

Choosing unique and thoughtful shower gifts can be a challenge. You can help new parents out with these innovative and meaningful baby presents.

Beauty and Cosmetics during Pregnancy: The Good and the Bad

0206931

Every pregnant woman wants to look her best during her pregnancy, but it is hard to use the same makeup you used before you got pregnant. Pregnancy changes your body chemistry, the composition of your skin and the way your body looks in the light. Your makeup, fragrances and skincare regimen all must change during your pregnancy, and you may find they will stay changed after you have your baby.
How Your Makeup Reacts to Your Skin

The makeup you normally use may not react to your face as it always has. The color you use on your face may not look the same as it has in the past, and these colors may not stay on your face as they once had. It is possible that your makeup will cause you to break out in hives, or you may form a rash. You should consider changing your foundation, blush and powder during your pregnancy. The change in your body chemistry may require you to maintain this change in your makeup after you have your baby.

Skincare

The skincare products you use may not give you the same results they once did. You are counting on your lotions and moisturizers to protect your skin, but these lotions may not do the job they once did. You cannot continue to use the same moisturizer if it does not help you, and your skin may dry out much faster than it would otherwise.

Your skincare regimen may need to increase when you are pregnant. Chronically dry skin is going to plague you when you are pregnant, and you may consider using more moisturizer than you did in the past. Many women resort to moisturizing their whole bodies every day, and you must keep up with this routine to prevent stretch marks. Do as much as you can to keep your skin moist and soft.
Sunscreen

A woman who is not accustomed to wearing sunscreen may need to start using sunscreen during her pregnancy. Your olive complexion may have helped you a good bit at the beach, but you must start wearing sunscreen because your skin is so much more sensitive.

Women who do not typically use sunscreen may turn to a foundation that has sun protection built-in. You need to keep your skin from being damaged in the hot sun, and you must take steps that will prevent sunburn and sun damage.

Skin Irritation

You may go to bed with your makeup on after a long day, and your skin has never reacted poorly to your makeup. You must start washing your face every evening to ensure your skin is safe. You will likely feel a good bit of irritation when you leave your makeup on for too long, and you may need to use a professional makeup remover.

Daily Makeup Application

You should change from pads to sponges when you apply your makeup, and you may consider scaling back the amount of makeup you are putting on every day. Reduce the amount of makeup you are using to help your skin cope with your pregnancy. Your pregnancy is going to make your skin reject a good bit of your makeup, and the makeup that you choose to wear going forward should be as light as possible.

Your body will not respond well to all the makeup you typically wear. You must make a change that is going to help you look your best during your pregnancy. You may choose to keep these makeup changes after you have your baby, but you must make careful changes for the health of your skin. If you are unsure about certain cosmetic products while you are pregnant, it is wise to consult with a physician like Dr. Gilbert Webb, to see what is safe for you.

3 Key Ways Pets Influence Children

A Wee Urban Guest Blog from Melissa Stevens!

Raising a child may be the most fulfilling process a human can experience, but it is truly based on a bittersweet mixture of events and emotions. Of course, the bitter part emerges from all the worries and anxiety that being responsible for another (helpless) human being can cause. The sweet part comprises all the beautiful moments that make up parenthood. If a parent wants to make a child’s upbringing even more interesting and colorful, getting a pet is a fabulous way to do it. Pets affect children’s development in an extraordinarily beneficial way.

altattribute

Boosting Imagination

One of the most important things that should be encouraged while a child is growing is the development of imagination. The evolution of the cognitive part of the child’s brain should be boosted from the earliest age. Sure, reading stories and playing with your child will give incentive to the development of both kinesthetic and mental skills, but if you add a pet to this cognition-boost set, the outcome will be even better. You can introduce different pets to your child and encourage him or her to become interested in them, as well as develop a higher level of empathy. In addition, reading to them about animals will help bolster your child(ren)’s imagination even more. As they get older, they will develop a life-long, animal-friendly attitude.

Stronger Family Bonds

Many families have problems when it comes to spending time together, but a pet can turn the things upside down and give birth to a special bond within your family. Instead of staring at TV every night of the week, you could spend at least a couple of nights playing with the pet and teaching your child how to treat it in the best way. Also, such occasions are a great opportunity to create a sense of togetherness, and teach your child that many things can be done more easily if all the family members participate. It could be mere dog/cat brushing, but you could also be something more involved, like a flea and tick or cleaning up after the pet, to introduce your child(ren) to some less pleasant duties that come with pet owning.

altattribute

Pet-Related Duties For Better Working Habits

A child can be brought up in many ways and every mother develops and applies some special rules of her own. But making a pet become a part of your child’s life usually has one common effect in most of the pet-having families – they become organized in a better way. Smaller pets, like tortoises and budgies are not that demanding, so they could be very attractive first pets for the beginning of your child’s active pet-owning life. For starters, kids will learn to feed them on a regular basis and become aware that animals also need emotional approval from their owners. Perhaps once children learn those skills, they may be ready for a cat or a dog. That way they will be taught that a larger pet causes more responsibility, just as it is the case with real life.

It is clear that a great bond can be established between a pet and a child, but every parent should understand that only with their help will children be able to develop special feelings for pets, and learn how to behave towards pets (and people) in an appropriate way. A pet can be great fun for the entire family, but it also requires a lot of care and attention, just like a child.

6 Ways to Design an Eco-Friendly Nursery for Baby

design an eco-friendly space for babyWhen you’re preparing to have a baby, you’ll probably look through all sorts of baby magazines to get an idea of the perfect space. Unfortunately, many of the products used in these pictures may be harmful to your new child. It’s vitally important that you consider the safety of the room your child will be spending a majority of the time.

Many parents are taking the initiate to “go green” and ensure their children live in the best environment possible. Here’s how you can design an eco-friendly space for your baby.

1. Choose a safe mattress and crib bedding.

Infants will spend a lot of time in their crib, so it’s important that you buy organic bedding and accessories. Even some of the so-called eco-friendly options contain trace amounts of chemicals and toxins you would rather not have near your children. Choose fabrics made with natural dyes. If you are stuck with a traditional mattress, top it with an organic mattress pad and sheet set.

2. Use eco-friendly cleaning products.

As a society, we’re becoming more aware of how dangerous the cleaning products beneath our sink can be. Pick up some organic cleaning products for use in the baby’s room. Be sure to check all the labels for any harsh chemicals or industrial compounds. For bathing purposes, always use a natural cleaning agent on your baby’s soft, delicate skin.

3. Paint properly.

Painted walls continue to emit toxins up to three years after they’re dry. Use paint with no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If you’re painting the room for your new little one, make sure to do it a few weeks in advance. Give the room plenty of time to air out – leave the windows open and a fan running. Leave the baby’s furniture out of the room during painting and drying.

4. Use eco-friendly furniture.

Cribs, dressers, changing tables, and shelves made with laminated wood, pressed wood, medium density fiberboard, and particle board can emit formaldehyde due to the glue in the products. Make sure everything is formaldehyde free, including the paint on each piece. If the product doesn’t have a label, look it up online based on where it was purchased so you can learn about it.

5. Stock it with organic clothing.

If you’re going to great lengths to make sure your nursery is full of safe products, you shouldn’t neglect baby’s clothing. After all, nothing will be closer to the skin. Find a manufacturer that truly cares for the environment. You can judge their commitment by their packaging: if the vendor is willing to offer post-consumer packaging, they care about their environmental impact.

6. Choose safe flooring.

Eco-friendly, natural woods and sustainable carpeting contain the fewest chemicals. Use materials like cork, natural linoleum, carpet, and bamboo. These materials are durable, so it will be a while before you need to replace them. Bamboo is especially eco-friendly because it grows quickly and doesn’t require a lot of space. Area rugs made from natural fibers such as jute, sisal, sea-grass, coir, and hemp, have become very popular. If you use conventional carpet, ask the retailer to leave it unrolled in a warehouse for at least a week to air out.

5 Reasons to “Go Green” and 3 Ways How

eco friendly laundry detergentEveryone wants to go green these days. We hear and read a lot about switching to organic products, wearing organic clothes, recycling, and our impact on the environment. But some people don’t understand why it’s important that we lessen our impact on our one and only Earth. Here are 5 reasons why you should “go green” and 3 simple ways how.

Five Reasons to Go Green

1. Eating organic and local food will improve your overall health. Not only do organic foods taste better, but they’re better for our health. They contain more nutrients than non-organic food and don’t contain pesticides or harmful chemicals that large, factory-farms use to preserve food. By buying local, you’re supporting a farmer who didn’t pollute as much as the farming conglomerate, which means better air quality for us all.

2. You are keeping the Earth clean and helping the environment. Organic materials can either be re-purposed for something else, or recycled and turned into new materials again. Reducing waste is the most important part of reducing strain on the environment. Your choices also help keep water clean and protects forests and other natural habitats.

3. You can slow down global warming. Global warming is partially caused by greenhouse emissions, which comes from all the cars we have on the road these days. By sharing a car or using public transportation, you’re reducing your carbon footprint, and slowing global warming.

4. You are supporting humane practices. Lots of eco-friendly products come from communities that practice fair labor practices, so you know they weren’t made in a sweatshop. Often they’re made right in our own country. Further, organic farmers have standards of treating their animals so you know the animal you’re consuming was treated with dignity.

5. You can save money by going green. Walking or taking public transportation can significantly cut down on gas costs, buying secondhand saves money, and so does growing your own vegetable garden and making your own cleaning products.

Three Changes That Will Make a Difference

1. Buy less and buy eco-friendly. Reduce how much you consume by buying gently used products from thrift stores or consignment stores. Borrow books and DVDs from your local library rather than buy new. And purchase sturdy clothing made from organic materials using eco-friendly techniques.

2. Use natural cleaning products and laundry detergents. All-natural cleaning products don’t contain toxins or chemicals that can harm your family. They use simple cleaning agents that are safe for your body, but still get the job done. Many of these cleaning products can be made right at home.

3. Replace your regular light bulbs. Newer, energy efficient light bulbs use less energy and last much longer. Some can save up to $92 over the course of the bulb’s lifetime! Also, remind your family to turn off lights each time they leave a room, and unplug your electronic devices if you’ll be away for a while.

12 Ways Moms Can Be Greener in 2014

eco friendly momThese days it’s easier for parents to live a greener lifestyle and teach their families to be environmentally conscious. There are so many ways that you can make a difference and make small lifestyle changes in order to help save and protect the earth. For moms this includes buying products that are eco-friendly, making your own natural products, and making the effort to do things a little differently than what you’re used to. Families can start by making one simple change for each month in 2014. By introducing these changes into your families’ lives gradually, it makes the transition to a greener lifestyle easier for kids and parents so everyone will be excited to adopt these changes.

 1. Buy organic baby/kids products and clothing

Parents should be paying attention to the materials that make up the products they buy for their kids. Often these products contain harmful ingredients and chemicals that are not safe for children. Always check the labels when purchasing baby and children’s products.  Avoid items containing polyurethane foam which is often treated with toxic fire-retardant chemicals.  Look for eco-friendly, hypo-allergenic, and non-toxic products made from organic materials with low-impact dyes.

 2. Car-free Saturdays

Every weekend parents can make the decision to not use the car at all and opt to walk or use their bike. Many times parents rely on their cars for every little trip, even if it’s just to drive a few blocks away to a friend’s house or to the park. Making the sacrifice to not use the car one day a week encourages families to go out into the fresh air and get some exercise. Plus it saves money on gas while reducing emissions that contribute to global warming.

 3. Ditch the Ziplocs and use reusable bags

Instead of using plastic bags that can be dangerous to the environment and have chemicals that can leach into food, opt for glass containers or reusable bags. Use bags that are eco-friendly, washable and BPA and Phthalate-free. Reusable bags are much more convenient and safe for storing lunch and snacks for kids when they are chemical-free. These bags can also be used for all kinds of storage to organize clutter and can be washed numerous times while remaining durable.

 4. Switch to eco-friendly cleaning products and laundry detergent

Using green cleaning products for the home ensures the safety of your family and pets. These cleaning products contain no harmful chemicals that are dangerous for your health and can cause allergies and skin rashes. You can even use some items you already own at home to make your own natural cleaners. Use eco-friendly cleaning products and laundry detergents that are super-safe for your home, are all-natural and great for those with sensitive skin.

 5. Use motion sensor lights or light dimmers in your home

Motion sensor lights can detect when someone enters and leaves a room so they automatically turn on or off. With these lights you will never forget to turn the lights off again so they automatically save energy for you and they’re great for kids who can’t remember to turn the lights off when they leave a room. Light dimmers also save energy while they are in use by using less electricity and they can save you money in the long-run.

6. Be smart about your paper/plastic use

You can reuse all of the paper in your home for kids’ art projects, wrapping paper and more. Use old magazines to make fun collages and old memos and note paper for kids to draw on. Make a printing mistake?  Don’t throw the paper away!  Have a bin nearby for recyclable paper.  When ordering take-out, let the restaurant know that you do not need them to send napkins, plastic utensils, condiments or anything else you already have. Finally, opt for dry-erase boards for writing down messages and notes to the family so you don’t have to use memo pads.

 7. Donate old clothes, toys and books

If your kids have gently-used clothes and toys they have outworn, donate them to a local thrift store or Salvation Army store so another family can use them. You can donate all sorts of items to these stores,  so clean out those closets and pantries, and make one big trip to the store. This is a great family activity and teaches children the importance of giving back.

8. Line-dry your clothing

A clothes dryer may be convenient but it also results in an expensive electric bill.  It can use more energy than any other appliance in your home. Start hanging your laundry on a clothes line to dry to cut down on costs and electricity. Did you know that in most homes in Russia and France they only have washing machines?  Everyone hangs their clothes to dry all year round.

9. Buy locally grown food

Buying local is a great way to save; food is fresher and tastes better. Plus, you’ll know exactly where your food is coming from and it’s healthier for you. When you buy local you’re supporting sustainability and farms with eco-friendly practices.

10. Set up recycling bins in your home

Get your kids to practice recycling regularly by setting up different colored recycling bins in the home. Teach kids which types of items go in each bin and what is not allowed in the bins. Show them the labels on items that indicate the item is recyclable and make a game out of it so kids have fun learning.  And recycle plastic grocery bags by taking them back to the grocery store and placing them in the appropriate bin. Buy and use recyclable shopping bags for your grocery runs.

11. Choose products with an Energy Star label

The Energy Star program is sponsored by the EPA and the Department of Energy and it rates different household appliances and items. An item with an Energy Star label guarantees the item is energy efficient. By using Energy Star products you use about 30% less energy than the average household.

12. Plant your own garden

Growing your own fruit and vegetables at home can save you a lot of money and provides your family with healthy, nutritious food. You don’t need a big space to grow a garden and it has an immensely positive impact on the environment. Use eco-friendly methods to maintain your garden, like composting and collecting water in a rain barrel.

nursing pillowGuest blog by Sandy Clark, Inventor of San Diego Bebe Eco-Nursing Pillow

San Diego Bebe® was designed by San Diego native Sandy Clark, a passionate breastfeeding advocate and mother of twins. Clark was inspired at a San Diego beach one day where she witnessed a young mother unsuccessfully nursing her baby. As the mother struggled to keep a blanket across her shoulder while her baby wailed from heat and hunger, Clark vowed then and there to design a product that would help resolve the issue of privacy while nursing. San Diego Bebe® was born that day.

When Clark sent her nursing pillow to Duke to be tested and reviewed, Duke University Chemical Scientist Dr. Heather Stapleton, who is a mother herself, said, “The San Diego Bebe® Eco-Nursing Pillow is not only a very supportive pillow with amazing features for discreet nursing, but is also free of flame-retardant chemicals that have been shown to cause adverse health effects in animal studies. I applaud Double Blessings (Clark’s company) for taking steps to produce high quality products that meet the same flammability standards without using these chemicals.”

San Diego Bebe® Eco-Nursing Pillow is the healthiest and most innovative nursing pillow on the market. Made with virgin polyfiber Eco*Loft™, a non-toxic and hypo-allergenic foam-alternative, it’s void of harmful chemicals. It’s also recyclable and eco-friendly. San Diego Bebe® is available in two versions, for nursing one baby or twins. The entire line is baby-safe, and is covered with deluxe plush fabrics including organic cotton.
