Beauty and Cosmetics during Pregnancy: The Good and the Bad

0206931

Every pregnant woman wants to look her best during her pregnancy, but it is hard to use the same makeup you used before you got pregnant. Pregnancy changes your body chemistry, the composition of your skin and the way your body looks in the light. Your makeup, fragrances and skincare regimen all must change during your pregnancy, and you may find they will stay changed after you have your baby.
How Your Makeup Reacts to Your Skin

The makeup you normally use may not react to your face as it always has. The color you use on your face may not look the same as it has in the past, and these colors may not stay on your face as they once had. It is possible that your makeup will cause you to break out in hives, or you may form a rash. You should consider changing your foundation, blush and powder during your pregnancy. The change in your body chemistry may require you to maintain this change in your makeup after you have your baby.

Skincare

The skincare products you use may not give you the same results they once did. You are counting on your lotions and moisturizers to protect your skin, but these lotions may not do the job they once did. You cannot continue to use the same moisturizer if it does not help you, and your skin may dry out much faster than it would otherwise.

Your skincare regimen may need to increase when you are pregnant. Chronically dry skin is going to plague you when you are pregnant, and you may consider using more moisturizer than you did in the past. Many women resort to moisturizing their whole bodies every day, and you must keep up with this routine to prevent stretch marks. Do as much as you can to keep your skin moist and soft.
Sunscreen

A woman who is not accustomed to wearing sunscreen may need to start using sunscreen during her pregnancy. Your olive complexion may have helped you a good bit at the beach, but you must start wearing sunscreen because your skin is so much more sensitive.

Women who do not typically use sunscreen may turn to a foundation that has sun protection built-in. You need to keep your skin from being damaged in the hot sun, and you must take steps that will prevent sunburn and sun damage.

Skin Irritation

You may go to bed with your makeup on after a long day, and your skin has never reacted poorly to your makeup. You must start washing your face every evening to ensure your skin is safe. You will likely feel a good bit of irritation when you leave your makeup on for too long, and you may need to use a professional makeup remover.

Daily Makeup Application

You should change from pads to sponges when you apply your makeup, and you may consider scaling back the amount of makeup you are putting on every day. Reduce the amount of makeup you are using to help your skin cope with your pregnancy. Your pregnancy is going to make your skin reject a good bit of your makeup, and the makeup that you choose to wear going forward should be as light as possible.

Your body will not respond well to all the makeup you typically wear. You must make a change that is going to help you look your best during your pregnancy. You may choose to keep these makeup changes after you have your baby, but you must make careful changes for the health of your skin. If you are unsure about certain cosmetic products while you are pregnant, it is wise to consult with a physician like Dr. Gilbert Webb, to see what is safe for you.

3 Key Ways Pets Influence Children

A Wee Urban Guest Blog from Melissa Stevens!

Raising a child may be the most fulfilling process a human can experience, but it is truly based on a bittersweet mixture of events and emotions. Of course, the bitter part emerges from all the worries and anxiety that being responsible for another (helpless) human being can cause. The sweet part comprises all the beautiful moments that make up parenthood. If a parent wants to make a child’s upbringing even more interesting and colorful, getting a pet is a fabulous way to do it. Pets affect children’s development in an extraordinarily beneficial way.

altattribute

Boosting Imagination

One of the most important things that should be encouraged while a child is growing is the development of imagination. The evolution of the cognitive part of the child’s brain should be boosted from the earliest age. Sure, reading stories and playing with your child will give incentive to the development of both kinesthetic and mental skills, but if you add a pet to this cognition-boost set, the outcome will be even better. You can introduce different pets to your child and encourage him or her to become interested in them, as well as develop a higher level of empathy. In addition, reading to them about animals will help bolster your child(ren)’s imagination even more. As they get older, they will develop a life-long, animal-friendly attitude.

Stronger Family Bonds

Many families have problems when it comes to spending time together, but a pet can turn the things upside down and give birth to a special bond within your family. Instead of staring at TV every night of the week, you could spend at least a couple of nights playing with the pet and teaching your child how to treat it in the best way. Also, such occasions are a great opportunity to create a sense of togetherness, and teach your child that many things can be done more easily if all the family members participate. It could be mere dog/cat brushing, but you could also be something more involved, like a flea and tick or cleaning up after the pet, to introduce your child(ren) to some less pleasant duties that come with pet owning.

altattribute

Pet-Related Duties For Better Working Habits

A child can be brought up in many ways and every mother develops and applies some special rules of her own. But making a pet become a part of your child’s life usually has one common effect in most of the pet-having families – they become organized in a better way. Smaller pets, like tortoises and budgies are not that demanding, so they could be very attractive first pets for the beginning of your child’s active pet-owning life. For starters, kids will learn to feed them on a regular basis and become aware that animals also need emotional approval from their owners. Perhaps once children learn those skills, they may be ready for a cat or a dog. That way they will be taught that a larger pet causes more responsibility, just as it is the case with real life.

It is clear that a great bond can be established between a pet and a child, but every parent should understand that only with their help will children be able to develop special feelings for pets, and learn how to behave towards pets (and people) in an appropriate way. A pet can be great fun for the entire family, but it also requires a lot of care and attention, just like a child.

Stylish and Eco-friendly Diaper Bags Moms Will Love

Diaper bags are an absolute essential item for mothers of all aged children. They’re necessary to hold so many different items that their child will need throughout the day while away from home. Due to this, finding the perfect diaper bag can sometimes be a little difficult with so many options to choose from.

Eco-friendly moms would certainly be looking for diaper bags that aren’t harmful to the environment or their children – something made from safe and non-toxic materials. Here are some suggestions of eco-friendly diaper bags for mothers.

Ergo Baby Carriers

eco-friendly diaper bag

The company Ergo Baby provides a full assortment of diaper bags, backpacks, changing stations, and front carrier pouches that can be chosen in a bunch of different colors and designs. The best part about this wide selection is that their products are all made of organic cotton. These products are available through their website as well as various retailers.

Kalencom

eco-friendly diaper bag

Upon first glance, it may look like Kalencom’s diaper bags are not eco-friendly due to the fact that they are made from PVC. However, the company assures it’s customers that the PVC they use contains no phthalates or other harmful chemicals that can be found in some baby products. Their diaper bags and accessories come in many different styles and designs, and they can also be found on their website and at retail sites.

Fleurville

eco-friendly diaper bag

Fleurville is an interesting company in that they are one of the very few that make their diaper bags out of recycled water bottles (PET). Also, the company says the bags are free of PVC, phthalates, and BPA chemicals. The products they offer are both fashionable and practical for moms looking for effective diaper bags for their child. These products can be found online through their website.

Diaper Dude

eco-friendly diaper bag

Diaper Dude offers both diaper bags and baby changing stations for dads on the go, and in manly designs. They are another company who has managed to make their products out of the material from recycled water bottles. Also, they are free if PVC and phthalates similar to almost all the other eco-friendly diaper bags on this list. They can be found through the company’s website as well as on Amazon.com.

Maxwell Designs

eco-friendly diaper bag

Maxwell Designs is a unique brand that is a part of Tootsntots.com. This company offers diaper bags that are purely made of hemp products! These hemp bags are free of dyes and synthetic fillers, making them another great eco-friendly choice for environmentally conscious moms. They can be found on the company’s website.

organic bedding and accessoriesGuest Blog by Jennifer Cicci of Babee Talk

As a mother, Jennifer understands the importance of offering nothing by the best for baby. Motivated by teeth marks on her children’s cribs, she decided to design a teething rail cover after trying products that didn’t measure up when it came to quality or style. What she found out made her even more concerned about children’s safety and health: The toxic chemicals used in the production of synthetic materials have been linked to birth defects, reproductive disorders, and weakened immune systems.

She asked herself, “What if I could revolutionize the way parents decorated their crib with a safe and stylish teething rail cover that could be placed on the crib from day one?” Babee Talk® launched in 2014 with organic bedding and accessories. Chew-friendly, drool-friendly, and organic inside and out, her products ensure a healthy start in life for babies.

She only offers products that she would provide for her own children. She hopes moms and dads will start to talk about the importance of choosing safe, healthy, eco-friendly products, especially for babies.

7 Tips on Treating a Baby’s Diaper Rash

treat diaper rashBaby skin is often smooth and perfect in every way, so parents become concerned when they notice red and irritated skin on baby’s bottom. Diaper rashes, however, are quite normal. They aren’t serious problems, but they’ll make your baby uncomfortable and irritated. Every baby gets them. When super sensitive skin meets urine, stool and a covering that rubs back and forth, rashes are inevitable.

Fortunately, you can prevent diaper rashes and cure them in a few days. With deliberate care, you can prevent diaper rashes from ever happening. Here are some tips on treating diaper rashes.

1. Change diapers immediately and often.

You want to change your newborn’s diaper at least every two hours. You can space this out more as your baby wets her diaper less, but never let her sit in wetness or waste for too long. Be sure to clean baby well, but don’t scrub the skin. If possible, give your baby some opportunities to be diaper-free.

2. Experiment with different brands.

Sometimes the glues and chemicals used to manufacture diapers or the chemicals in the adhesive tape can be irritating to some babies. Try a different brand that uses different materials. Consider using cloth diapers that aren’t made with these materials.

3. Ensure a proper fit.

Often a diaper rash problem is easily cured by choosing diapers that fit well. Loose or tight diapers don’t respond to the body’s movements properly and cause friction and irritation.

4. Dry baby’s bottom.

Once you have removed a soiled diaper and cleaned your baby’s bottom, don’t forget to dry her off using a clean cloth so moisture doesn’t get trapped in the new diaper. Don’t rub; pat the area dry. If possible, leave her exposed for a few minutes.

5. Choose made-for-baby skin care products.

Make sure that any creams, powders, ointments, shampoos, and soaps are made especially for babies. Products made for adults often contain strong fragrances, detergents and dyes that can damage sensitive skin and exacerbate an existing rash. Wash baby’s clothes separately in a baby-safe laundry detergent.

6. Apply diaper rash cream.

Before putting on the new diaper, use a generous amount of diaper rash cream. There are several varieties available in stores, so you’ll have to choose one that’s right for you and your baby’s rashes (some products are for everyday use, others are for extreme flare-ups, etc.). Most contain zinc oxide or hydro-cortisone cream.

7. Use vinegar when cleaning cloth diapers.

If you’ve opted to use cloth diapers, you’ll want to make sure they’re especially clean since they’ll be going back on your baby’s bottom. Stale urine is extremely alkaline, so you’ll want to use a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle when you wash cloth diapers.

7 Ways to Repurpose Old Baby Items

reuse baby itemsWaste not, want not!

Just because your children are getting older doesn’t mean you have to toss out all those useful (and expensive!) baby items. An important part of living a healthy lifestyle means reducing your impact on the environment by limiting the number of new items you purchase. If it can safely be reused, you should find a way. Here are ways you can reuse old baby items.

1. Baby wipes container becomes an organizer.

Those plastic containers you’re always throwing out make perfect organizer boxes for all your little items, like makeup, hair accessories, art supplies, writing implements, sewing materials, and other odds and ends. Label their contents with a heavy marker and stack them easily in a closet or drawer.

2. Baby food jars become… baby food jars!

At some point you’ll buy those tiny baby food jars from the supermarket. If you ever make your own baby food, these jars (properly cleaned and sanitized, of course) are perfect containers. After pureeing your baby’s homemade food, refill the jars and store them in your refrigerator.

Baby food jars are also handy for spices and paints.

2. A baby’s crib becomes a toddler’s bed.

You can remove the front piece of the crib entirely or cut it down the middle (leaving room for your toddler to get in and out of the crib, but enough “fencing” to keep him or her from rolling out). This is a great way to transition your child into a big kid’s bed. They’ll adjust to a space they can get in and out of on their own, but it still feels familiar.

Click here for a detailed guide.

3. A changing table becomes a serving cart.

This will require some woodworking skills, but nothing you can’t learn on YouTube. By installing a heavy-duty set of wheels to one side of the piece, your multi-shelved changing table is the perfect way to serve food and drinks to your guests outdoors, or at a dinner party where there isn’t room to stock the table.

Click here for a detailed guide.

4. Baby socks become dusting rags.

Truthfully, you can turn any old piece of clothing into a rag, but baby socks are handy because you can slip them over your fingers or hands to quickly dust difficult areas, like bookcases full of items or the tops of cabinets. Once finished dusting, throw them in the wash with everything else.

5. The crib becomes a toddler’s desk.

By entirely removing the front section of the crib and mattress, you can create a toddler-height desk that’s perfect for arts and crafts, coloring and playing with table-top toys. Hang crafting equipment along the bars at the back and sides of the crib. Place one or two child-sized chairs in front of the desk. You could paint the surface of the desk a new color or let your kids draw whatever they like.

Click here for a detailed guide.

6. Send your baby clothes to a different family.

There’s never a reason to discard children’s clothing. Kids grow so quickly that buying everything new would put a tremendous burden on any family. Rather than throw away your child’s old clothes, bag them up and store them for your next child, or offer them to a family with new children of their own.

7. A diaper pail becomes a compost bin.

The diaper pail’s biggest benefit is that it contains odors. You can turn your old pail into a compost collector. Store organic and biodegradable materials within as part of your “go green” lifestyle.

First-Timer’s Guide to Cloth Diapers

cloth diaperingCloth diapering is an affordable way to diaper your child while reducing your impact on the environment, but in a culture where most people use disposable diapers, many people won’t have answers for you. Now that you have decided to go with cloth diapers, you should arm yourself with some basic information. Here are a few questions first-time cloth diaper users ask.

How many cloth diapers will I need?

Generally, you will want enough diapers to last two to three days. You will want enough diapers to make a full load and then a few extra for the time period you’re doing laundry. Newborns go through the most. 24 to 36 diapers is a good sized stash for newborns. As your baby gets older, you won’t need as many.

Which brand should I choose

That’s entirely up to you. What some people love, others hate. The best option you have is to buy a few singles and try them out. See which ones you and your baby prefer. Also, the type of diapers you prefer may change as your baby gets older and starts moving around. Body shapes change over time, so you might need to switch brands.

Sized diapers or one-size-fits-all?

One-sized-fits all diapers are great (and cheap overall), but they aren’t suitable to tiny infants. There’s a lot of bulk involved and you have to work to get them off and on. Again, you’ll have to try a few of each to make the decision for yourself. Many people prefer to used sized diapers for the first six months and then switch to one-size-fits-all. You’ll get use out of the one-sized-fits-all for at least a year, probably more while you work on potty training.

How much does cloth diapering cost?

There is a wide range of cost of cloth diapers. Some are as cheap as $2.00 each, while others (fitted diapers with pockets) can be as much as $30.00. It’s likely that you’ll have a mix of different types of diapers for different purposes. The average child costs about $3000 for disposable diapers over his/her life (from birth to fully potty trained), but only about $350 in disposable costs. Even with increases to your electric and water bills because of the additional washing, you still will save a significant amount of money.

Are cloth diapers hard to wash?

Not at all. It’s little more work than doing laundry. Before your child eats solids, dirty diapers can go straight into a trash can lined with a regular kitchen bag. After solid foods begin, you may have to shake or spray off feces from the diaper into the toilet. Add a little baking soda to the bag to kill any odor (but there won’t be much). Every two days you’ll want to prewash with cold water to cleanse away any matter, and then hot wash for sanitization. Rinse and dry.

What type of detergent should I use?

Ideally, something safe and made for sensitive skin. Rockin’ Green makes excellent laundry soap for babies. Never use fabric softeners on diapers; they can cause rashes.

10 Ways to Prepare for a New Baby

bringing new baby homeBringing a new baby into the world is an exciting and joyful time for new parents. They look forward to bonding with their little one. For first time parents, there will be a lot of adjusting. Taking care of an infant can be a round-the-clock job, which can be overwhelming for parents. My husband and I have recently brought a new baby into our family and we want to offer you some tips for bringing your new baby home.

1. Get your rest while baby sleeps.

Whenever baby is taking a nap is when mom should be getting her sleep as well. Forget about trying to get housework done while baby is asleep. It is much more important for you to get your rest so that you have the energy to take care of baby and you both stay healthy.

2. Swaddling helps soothe baby to sleep

Swaddling provides baby with a warm and soothing womb-like environment for extra comfort and security. It also helps prevent startle reflex in babies which will have them waking themselves up while they sleep. A baby swaddle like the Miracle Blanket or the Woombie makes swaddling super easy for parents and both swaddles are safe and effective. Once baby starts to roll over this is a sign that swaddling is no longer safe, in which case it is a good idea to switch to a transition sleep garment.

3. Breastfeeding is beneficial for both mom and baby.

Breastfeeding provides babies with all of the essential vitamins and nutrients they need and is full of disease-fighting substances to keep baby healthy, especially during baby’s first six months. Breastfeeding has been shown to lower the risk of childhood cancers, stomach viruses, ear infections and several other illnesses. It also protects baby from developing allergies later on and it improves cognitive development. For moms, breastfeeding reduced stress, postpartum depression, and reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

4. Get the right car seat.

For infants under 2 years of age, they must be placed in a rear-facing car seat for their safety as the back of the seat will cradle baby’s head, neck and torso. Always read the owner’s manual to make sure you are installing the seat correctly and correctly using the seat belt or harness. Make sure the harness straps fit snugly over your baby and don’t dress them in bulky clothing.

5. Keep baby safe from germs.

Remember to always wash your hands before handling baby and have any visitors wash their hands as well because babies have weak immune systems are susceptible to infection. Let your children hold the new baby but don’t let them kiss the baby’s face if you want to be on the safe side. Breastfeeding baby also helps give baby’s immune system a boost.

6. Learn how to prevent diaper rash.

A diaper rash is pretty common because babies have sensitive skin and the rash will go away on its own but there are some things you can do to prevent it. Make sure to change baby’s diaper frequently and change a poopy diaper as soon as possible. When using a cloth diaper you should wash it in a fragrance-free or all-natural detergent for sensitive skin. You can also apply a diaper rash cream on baby after cleaning the area with a wipe.

7. Place baby to sleep on his back.

Babies must be placed to sleep on their backs in order to reduce the risk of SIDS. The reason for this is that a baby sleeping on his stomach may not get enough oxygen or he risks re-breathing his own exhaled carbon dioxide. It’s also important not to place anything else in the crib with baby, so no pillows, blankets, stuffed toys, etc. You don’t want anything to accidentally fall on baby’s face and potentially suffocate baby.

9. Trust your instincts.

Mother’s instinct is always right so practice listening to your gut instincts and follow them. You won’t always know what’s best and every parent makes mistakes with their first baby but that is how you learn. Also understand that what works for one baby doesn’t always work for another. Instead of constantly doubting or second guessing yourself, be confident that you know your baby best and can get the best feel for what he needs.

8. Get some fresh air.

You’ll go crazy if you stay cooped up in the house for too long so head outside with baby and get some fresh air. If the weather is warm go for a walk in the park and bring a picnic blanket or baby play mat so you and baby can lie down on the grass. Just be sure to keep baby protected from the sun and dressed appropriately for the weather.

10. Ask for help if you need it.

As a new parent you sometimes struggle to juggle everything at home and raising a baby is hard work. You will need to take some time for yourself and get some rest before you become completely worn down. If you feel like you need a break, don’t be afraid to ask a friend or family member for help. They will understand that everyone needs a little help sometimes, even “supermom”. If you have any questions (even if you think it’s a strange question), talk to your pediatrician or even call up a fellow mom who will be understanding.

transition baby from swaddleWritten by Stephanie Parker from Sleepingbaby.com, inventors of the Zipadee-Zip

The motto for Sleeping Baby, makers of the Zipadee-Zip, is: “Inspiring Dreams One Night at A time,” and that, in a nutshell, is how it all started…with one little dream that has since become the Parker family’s reality. When Brett and Stephanie Parker’s daughter, Charlotte, was born, the feeling that welled up inside of them was indescribable; they never realized until first looking into those baby blues of hers that they were even capable of that kind of love.

When it was time to transition baby from swaddling, the Parkers tried every sleep sack on the market and every swaddle weaning trick they could find for nearly two weeks and nothing worked to get baby Charlotte to fall and stay asleep.

Stephanie became determined to restore sleep and sanity to their household and set out to find a solution that would soothe Charlotte’s startle reflex and provide her the cozy womb-like environment she loved so much but still give her the freedom to roll over and wiggle around in her crib safely. Out of sheer desperation and exhaustion, the Zipadee-Zip was born. The first Zipadee-Zip(R) Stephanie put together on her little sewing machine worked like magic!

To date tens of thousands of Zipadee-Zips have been sold and all from word-of-mouth marketing. It is so rewarding for the Parkers to see other parents and babies getting the sleep they both need and deserve!

5 Reasons to “Go Green” and 3 Ways How

eco friendly laundry detergentEveryone wants to go green these days. We hear and read a lot about switching to organic products, wearing organic clothes, recycling, and our impact on the environment. But some people don’t understand why it’s important that we lessen our impact on our one and only Earth. Here are 5 reasons why you should “go green” and 3 simple ways how.

Five Reasons to Go Green

1. Eating organic and local food will improve your overall health. Not only do organic foods taste better, but they’re better for our health. They contain more nutrients than non-organic food and don’t contain pesticides or harmful chemicals that large, factory-farms use to preserve food. By buying local, you’re supporting a farmer who didn’t pollute as much as the farming conglomerate, which means better air quality for us all.

2. You are keeping the Earth clean and helping the environment. Organic materials can either be re-purposed for something else, or recycled and turned into new materials again. Reducing waste is the most important part of reducing strain on the environment. Your choices also help keep water clean and protects forests and other natural habitats.

3. You can slow down global warming. Global warming is partially caused by greenhouse emissions, which comes from all the cars we have on the road these days. By sharing a car or using public transportation, you’re reducing your carbon footprint, and slowing global warming.

4. You are supporting humane practices. Lots of eco-friendly products come from communities that practice fair labor practices, so you know they weren’t made in a sweatshop. Often they’re made right in our own country. Further, organic farmers have standards of treating their animals so you know the animal you’re consuming was treated with dignity.

5. You can save money by going green. Walking or taking public transportation can significantly cut down on gas costs, buying secondhand saves money, and so does growing your own vegetable garden and making your own cleaning products.

Three Changes That Will Make a Difference

1. Buy less and buy eco-friendly. Reduce how much you consume by buying gently used products from thrift stores or consignment stores. Borrow books and DVDs from your local library rather than buy new. And purchase sturdy clothing made from organic materials using eco-friendly techniques.

2. Use natural cleaning products and laundry detergents. All-natural cleaning products don’t contain toxins or chemicals that can harm your family. They use simple cleaning agents that are safe for your body, but still get the job done. Many of these cleaning products can be made right at home.

3. Replace your regular light bulbs. Newer, energy efficient light bulbs use less energy and last much longer. Some can save up to $92 over the course of the bulb’s lifetime! Also, remind your family to turn off lights each time they leave a room, and unplug your electronic devices if you’ll be away for a while.
