Bee-aware and Bee-wear! Why you should know about the “Plight of the honeybee”

Honey Bees have been a staple of suburban gardens for lifetimes on lifetimes, always buzzing around and never really bothering anyone until being bothered themselves. At this point in time, the honey bee is integral to the survival of our agricultural system, and they are slowly but surely dying off.

honeybee-honeycomb-macro_26201_990x742In a 2013 Time Magazine cover article titled “A World Without Bees” Journalist Bryan Walsh delved into the heart of the issues commonly referred to as the “Plight of the Honeybee”
bee-cover-0813

The first line of the feature read, “You can thank the Apis Mellifera, better known as the Western honeybee, for 1 in every 3 mouthfuls of food you’ll eat today.”

Yes the western honeybee is one of the most important animals in the production of the produce that we consume every single day.

Walsh added later, “Honeybees — which pollinate crops like apples, blueberries and cucumbers — are the “glue that holds our agricultural system together,” as the journalist Hannah Nordhaus put it in her 2011 book The Beekeeper’s Lament. (In fact, nearly 70% off all crops that are grown today require pollination.) But that glue is failing. Bee hives are dying off or disappearing thanks to a still-unsolved malady called colony collapse disorder (CCD), so much so that commercial beekeepers are being pushed out of the business.”

CCD is based on multiple factors, most are cause by human influence, these are:

  • Pesticides that human’s spray on our crops.
  • Biological Threats like the Varroa mite are killing off colonies directly and spreading deadly diseases.
  • Over-production of commodity crops such as wheat and corn that provide no pollen for honey bees and therefore they are literally starving to death.

The population decrease is so profound in some areas that places that were considered honey bee hotbeds like Iowa, has lost 70% of its population over 6 years. (from 2006-2012)

During that same time period, California, lost nearly half of its honey bee population. And from 2010-2015, the United States has lost 30% of its total honeybee population, and bee colonies are now no longer existent.

Canada is not immune to the problem either, but there are many great organizations fighting to save the bees, including Bees Are Life, which is based right in Toronto. We plan to team up with them in the near future.

Our Bee dress is meant to raise awareness around the plight of the honey bee and hopefully work towards changing it to a more hopeful, rebounding, and rising in population, flight of the honey bee.

Check out the beautiful dress below and pre order soon on our website.

Adorable Back to School Clothes for Toddlers

It’s that time of year again; the time when summer officially ends, the kids are headed back to school, and mom is left with a little peace and quiet. In my family, one of our back to school traditions is to go fall clothes shopping with the kids. We make a day out of it, shopping for back to school clothes and grabbing lunch when we are finished. We always have such a great time together, and the kids get to pick out new clothes for the school year. I believe that even for younger kids, it’s important to let them pick out their clothes (within reason, of course). It builds their self-confidence.

This year I decided to check out some stores online before we venture in and I saw some really cute stuff! Here are some adorable back to school clothes for toddlers.

1. Wee Urban Cotton & Bamboo Dress

A Wee Urban dress is the perfect first day of school outfit! It’s comfortable, cozy and totally adorable. The dresses come in four different prints: owl, peacock, elephant and giraffe. Most importantly, the dresses can be worn in a variety of ways and remain comfortable, as-in, with leggings, or with/without a cardigan or sweater. With such a great selection, your daughter is sure to find her new favorite fall dress.

2. Gap Varsity Jacket

Unlike the summer, fall is a time for layers. It might be chilly outdoors, but inside schools and buses may still be warm, so your kids will want something they can remove. Your kids are going to need a good back to school jacket, one that is not too heavy for cool fall days. Gap’s boys’ varsity jacket is just that! It is so cute. I bet your boy would feel like one of the cool older kids wearing it! It is the perfect boys back to school jacket.

3. Gymboree Leggings

Leggings are very popular right now, so your daughter cannot go back to school without a new pair of leggings! I think leggings are great for toddlers because they are comfortable and allow freedom for a lot of running around. These leggings from Gymboree are great for the fall and they would be cute paired with a pink knit sweater.

4. Carter’s Dinosaur Tee

My son would love this tee-shirt! Rarr! Carter’s dinosaur tee-shirt is just what any boy needs for back to school. It goes perfect with any pair of jeans or khakis and it’s a great conversation starter amongst his friends.. Let your little boy have fun picking this out and showing it off to all of his friends at school.

5. Old Navy Canvas Sneakers

Your little one is going to need a good pair of back to school sneakers. I personally love these canvas sneakers by Old Navy because they are cute and practical. Your preschooler is going to be doing a lot of activities and running around, so they are going to need a pair of shoes that support their feet without being uncomfortable. Plus, every kid loves tie-dye!
