6 Unique Gift Ideas for the Next Baby Shower You Attend

Expectant moms and dads are often inundated with well-intentioned, yet redundant shower gifts. When you want to your gift to be truly appreciated, you can show your happiness for their new arrival and also show that you want to help them with their upcoming role as parents by showing up with one of these unique shower gifts in hand.
Trendy Baby Clothing

New parents always appreciate clothing for their little one. Rather than gift the standard colorful onesie or footed sleeper, you can give them a set of clothing that is trendy, stylish, and fun from places like Shop Sugar Babies. Clothing that is emblazoned with their favorite sports team logo or embroidered with cute designs will give the new parents something fun and beautiful to dress their baby in later.

(Wee Urban edit – Wee Urban has some amazing trendy clothes too) :)
Baby Bullet

Adults today are crazy about making their own smoothies. With the Baby Bullet, they can also make their baby a fresh smoothie that contains their little one’s favorite fruits and veggies. With more parents getting away from feeding their babies processed baby food, the Baby Bullet can be the ideal shower gift.

Baby Cry Analyzer

Even the most experienced of parents may have no idea why their baby is crying. They can know for sure when you give them an innovative Baby Cry Analyzer, as found from this Buzzfeed post. It shows them if their baby is hungry, sleepy, colicky, or experiencing other distresses.

Stroller Storage Organizer

Moms know what a hassle it can be to carry a purse while pushing a stroller. When you show up with a stroller storage organizer in hand, you relieve this mom’s future frustration at being unable to keep her purse up on her shoulder while pushing the stroller. The organizer fits over a stroller’s handles and has enough room for a phone, bill fold, and other essentials.

Battery Operated Nail Cutter

New moms and dads dread cutting their babies’ nails. You can make it easier for them by giving them a battery operated nail cutter. This cutter uses gentle motions to cut a baby’s nails and helps avoid painful cuts and tears.

Baby Barolo Cocoon

Babies love to be swaddled, but few parents actually master the blanket swaddling technique. You can help new moms and dads keep their little one swaddled by giving them a Baby Barolo cocoon. This blanket keeps Baby cocooned and happy.

Choosing unique and thoughtful shower gifts can be a challenge. You can help new parents out with these innovative and meaningful baby presents.

Beauty and Cosmetics during Pregnancy: The Good and the Bad

0206931

Every pregnant woman wants to look her best during her pregnancy, but it is hard to use the same makeup you used before you got pregnant. Pregnancy changes your body chemistry, the composition of your skin and the way your body looks in the light. Your makeup, fragrances and skincare regimen all must change during your pregnancy, and you may find they will stay changed after you have your baby.
How Your Makeup Reacts to Your Skin

The makeup you normally use may not react to your face as it always has. The color you use on your face may not look the same as it has in the past, and these colors may not stay on your face as they once had. It is possible that your makeup will cause you to break out in hives, or you may form a rash. You should consider changing your foundation, blush and powder during your pregnancy. The change in your body chemistry may require you to maintain this change in your makeup after you have your baby.

Skincare

The skincare products you use may not give you the same results they once did. You are counting on your lotions and moisturizers to protect your skin, but these lotions may not do the job they once did. You cannot continue to use the same moisturizer if it does not help you, and your skin may dry out much faster than it would otherwise.

Your skincare regimen may need to increase when you are pregnant. Chronically dry skin is going to plague you when you are pregnant, and you may consider using more moisturizer than you did in the past. Many women resort to moisturizing their whole bodies every day, and you must keep up with this routine to prevent stretch marks. Do as much as you can to keep your skin moist and soft.
Sunscreen

A woman who is not accustomed to wearing sunscreen may need to start using sunscreen during her pregnancy. Your olive complexion may have helped you a good bit at the beach, but you must start wearing sunscreen because your skin is so much more sensitive.

Women who do not typically use sunscreen may turn to a foundation that has sun protection built-in. You need to keep your skin from being damaged in the hot sun, and you must take steps that will prevent sunburn and sun damage.

Skin Irritation

You may go to bed with your makeup on after a long day, and your skin has never reacted poorly to your makeup. You must start washing your face every evening to ensure your skin is safe. You will likely feel a good bit of irritation when you leave your makeup on for too long, and you may need to use a professional makeup remover.

Daily Makeup Application

You should change from pads to sponges when you apply your makeup, and you may consider scaling back the amount of makeup you are putting on every day. Reduce the amount of makeup you are using to help your skin cope with your pregnancy. Your pregnancy is going to make your skin reject a good bit of your makeup, and the makeup that you choose to wear going forward should be as light as possible.

Your body will not respond well to all the makeup you typically wear. You must make a change that is going to help you look your best during your pregnancy. You may choose to keep these makeup changes after you have your baby, but you must make careful changes for the health of your skin. If you are unsure about certain cosmetic products while you are pregnant, it is wise to consult with a physician like Dr. Gilbert Webb, to see what is safe for you.

3 Key Ways Pets Influence Children

A Wee Urban Guest Blog from Melissa Stevens!

Raising a child may be the most fulfilling process a human can experience, but it is truly based on a bittersweet mixture of events and emotions. Of course, the bitter part emerges from all the worries and anxiety that being responsible for another (helpless) human being can cause. The sweet part comprises all the beautiful moments that make up parenthood. If a parent wants to make a child’s upbringing even more interesting and colorful, getting a pet is a fabulous way to do it. Pets affect children’s development in an extraordinarily beneficial way.

altattribute

Boosting Imagination

One of the most important things that should be encouraged while a child is growing is the development of imagination. The evolution of the cognitive part of the child’s brain should be boosted from the earliest age. Sure, reading stories and playing with your child will give incentive to the development of both kinesthetic and mental skills, but if you add a pet to this cognition-boost set, the outcome will be even better. You can introduce different pets to your child and encourage him or her to become interested in them, as well as develop a higher level of empathy. In addition, reading to them about animals will help bolster your child(ren)’s imagination even more. As they get older, they will develop a life-long, animal-friendly attitude.

Stronger Family Bonds

Many families have problems when it comes to spending time together, but a pet can turn the things upside down and give birth to a special bond within your family. Instead of staring at TV every night of the week, you could spend at least a couple of nights playing with the pet and teaching your child how to treat it in the best way. Also, such occasions are a great opportunity to create a sense of togetherness, and teach your child that many things can be done more easily if all the family members participate. It could be mere dog/cat brushing, but you could also be something more involved, like a flea and tick or cleaning up after the pet, to introduce your child(ren) to some less pleasant duties that come with pet owning.

altattribute

Pet-Related Duties For Better Working Habits

A child can be brought up in many ways and every mother develops and applies some special rules of her own. But making a pet become a part of your child’s life usually has one common effect in most of the pet-having families – they become organized in a better way. Smaller pets, like tortoises and budgies are not that demanding, so they could be very attractive first pets for the beginning of your child’s active pet-owning life. For starters, kids will learn to feed them on a regular basis and become aware that animals also need emotional approval from their owners. Perhaps once children learn those skills, they may be ready for a cat or a dog. That way they will be taught that a larger pet causes more responsibility, just as it is the case with real life.

It is clear that a great bond can be established between a pet and a child, but every parent should understand that only with their help will children be able to develop special feelings for pets, and learn how to behave towards pets (and people) in an appropriate way. A pet can be great fun for the entire family, but it also requires a lot of care and attention, just like a child.

St. Paddy’s With Your Kids

1) Assuming your kids aren’t yet built for a traditional game of Irish football or rugby, try some of these games in honour of St. Patrick’s Day! Play a  game of Hot Potato or consider a “potato hunt” (think: Easter egg hunt but with small potatoes) or a “Pot o’ Gold” treasure hunt (a search for gold chocolate coins). All these easy household games will get your kids involved in St. Patrick’s Day and hopefully make them tired, a bit earlier!

2) Depending where you live, check local event listings for a St. Patrick’s Day parade! Dress in your best green attire, and get ready to watch some cool bagpipers, Irish step dancers, and fire engines roll through. It’s like Santa is coming to town 9 months early…. and is wearing green!

3) Stock up on green construction paper and craft supplies, and get creative with your little leprechauns. St. Patrick’s day crafts are adorable and make great party decorations or gifts for grandparents. Plus, who doesn’t love making crafts!

4) Eat some Irish food why don’t ya!!! Popular Celtic cuisine includes potato dishes , soda bread, meaty stews and dinner pies. So there’s plenty to choose from beyond not-so-kid-friendly corned beef and cabbage for your St.Patrick’s Day. Or simply dye some of your favorite treats, such as cupcakes and milkshakes, with green food colouring. What kid doesn’t love colourful food!

5)Learn, learn, learn! Take some time to explore the meaning of St. Patrick’s Day and test your family on some Irish trivia. Do you know why the shamrock is a symbol of St. Paddy’s Day? No! Well you should! Get the kids to ask the questions and see if they can stump their family members!

Finally… you can always do all 5 of these things in one night! After all, for most, St. Paddy’s is something that you do in excess!

If you have any cool St. Paddy’s Day traditions! Leave a comment below! And check out our Wee Love It Wednesday this week… for a little Green Envy!

4 Ways to Keep Kids Busy in the Summer

summer ideas for kidsIt’s summertime! That means school-aged children will be home, bored and looking to get out of the house. Entertaining your kids and keeping up with life’s other demands can be challenging, especially if you’re a breastfeeding mom or otherwise caring for a baby. You’ll need some entertainment options that don’t require your direct participation. Here are some ideas to keep your kids busy during the summer break.

1. Send them to summer camp.

Daily summer camps are perfect for busy moms and bored kids. Your local community likely has lots of summer camp options for children of any age. Some are camps are designed specifically for certain activities, like art, science, or basketball. Others are more general and give kids freedom to play however they like while also running organized games. They can play on a kickball team or ride the swings with their friends. The camp organizers are good about keeping kids active.

2.  Visit the public pool.

Admission to your local community pool is usually free or very cheap. If you don’t have a public pool, memberships to the YMCA are also inexpensive. Take your kids to the pool for a few hours for them to swim and splash around. You can hang out nearby with your baby while your older children play. If your baby is old enough, introduce him or her to the water! This option doesn’t give you much time to get chores done, but you’ll spend time with your family.

3. Invest in a set of bicycles.

Riding bikes is a timeless activity for kids. They love the excitement and independence. You can pick up some quality bikes for your kids without breaking your bank. Not only will they spend the day getting exercise, but they’ll burn off all that young energy and fall right asleep later. With a lawn chair and a glass of iced-tea, you can relax outside and watch them pedal up and down the street.

4. Create a gallery of artwork.

Gather all the arts and craft supplies you can. You’ll need construction paper, crayons, markers, string, tape, paste, paints, wrapping paper, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, and anything else you or your children desire. Cover a table in a sheet you don’t mind ruining and spread all the supplies over the table. Have them spend the day creating their own artwork for display all over the house. Challenge them to tell you what they created and what it means.

nursing pillowGurst blog by Sandy Clark, Inventor of San Diego Bebe Eco-Nursing Pillow

San Diego Bebe® was designed by San Diego native Sandy Clark, a passionate breastfeeding advocate and mother of twins. Clark was inspired at a San Diego beach one day where she witnessed a young mother unsuccessfully nursing her baby. As the mother struggled to keep a blanket across her shoulder for privacy while her baby wailed from heat and hunger, Clark vowed then and there to design a product that would help resolve the issue of discretion while nursing in public. San Diego Bebe® was born that day.

After Clark read a recent Duke University study on toxic chemicals in baby products, she sent her nursing pillow to Duke to be tested and reviewed. Duke University Chemical Scientist Dr. Heather Stapleton, the nation’s leading fire-retardant research specialist, and a new mother herself, said, “It’s wonderful to find a nursing pillow on the market that is not treated with chemical flame-retardant additives in the filling material. San Diego Bebe® Eco-Nursing Pillow is not only a very supportive pillow with amazing features for discreet nursing, but is also free of flame-retardant chemicals that have been shown to cause adverse health effects in animal studies. I applaud this manufacturer for taking steps to produce high quality products that meet the same flammability standards without using these chemicals.”

San Diego Bebe® Eco-Nursing Pillow is the healthiest and most innovative nursing pillow on the market. Made with virgin Eco*Loft™ fiber, a non-toxic and hypo-allergenic foam-alternative, it’s void of harmful chemicals. It’s also recyclable and eco-friendly. San Diego Bebe® is available in two versions, for nursing one baby or twins. The entire line is baby-safe, and is covered with deluxe plush fabrics including organic cotton.

How to Have Fun Gardening With the Kids

create a garden with kidsNow that it is summertime, it’s time to start doing more outdoor activities with the kids. Want to get your kids outside to enjoy all that nature has to offer? I know just the activity! One really great activity that both you and the kids would enjoy is gardening. Gardening can be a lot of fun! By the end of your day not only will you have your summer flowers planted, but you will have also bonded with your kids, and worked up a sweat. Here are five ways to have fun gardening with the kids:

1. Give them their own garden beds.

If you are just having them help you, gardening isn’t going to be much fun for the kids. Whether you use raised beds, containers, or ground pots, be sure to give each child their own to work on. They will have so much fun creating their own garden and feel proud of their accomplishment when they are finished!

2. Use seeds.

Although it may seem easier to use a kit, planting actual seeds is better. Your child will get to learn the process of how a plant grows and will be able to see it start from a seed and turn into a flower. You should also let your child tend to the plant once it has grown, they will really enjoy taking care of it and it teaches them responsibility!

3. Play music.

To make gardening seem less like a chore, and more like playtime, play some music while you are planting. Make sure you pick a station or CD your child likes. Take breaks and have mini dance parties to spice up the planting. Your child will love dancing among the pretty plants!

4. Make a fairy garden.

One way you can have fun gardening with the kids is by making a fairy garden. This one is especially great if you have a daughter. Girls love fairies and will love showing off her garden to her friends. It doesn’t take a lot to make a fairy garden, just a few tools and a lot of happy energy! Here’s how you make a fairy garden.

5. Build a worm farm

You can have the fairy garden for your daughter and a warm farm for your son! A worm farm could keep your son occupied for hours. They will be so consumed with the worms and dirt that they will forget you promised them ice cream for dessert! Not only will this activity teach kids how to look after a part of nature, but it will also teach them a bit of science, as they watch the worms turn soil into nutrient-rich fertilizer for all the springtime seeds they have just planted!

6 Ways Parents Can Prepare to Take a Trip with Baby

tips for traveling with a babyFor many of us, summer is the perfect time for traveling. We get to see our family, experience nature, or spend some time in a warmer climate. Often, families forgo travel because they have a baby with them. Some think it’s too much effort or they won’t have a good time, but that isn’t true! Use these tips to make traveling with a baby simple and care-free.

1. Plan ahead.

Consider the weather during the days of your trip. Make a list of clothing items everyone will need. If you’re driving, plot the course and your stops. Have remedies ready to go when baby becomes fussy in the car seat. Each problem you solve ahead of time is one less you’ll have to deal with.

2. Stock that diaper bag.

For your road trip, pack a few extra diapers and wipes, some toys, a pacifier or lovey, and any feeding items you will want (baby food, spoons, etc). Pack a multi-purpose wrap because it has so many uses; use it for diaper changes, as a burp cloth, a sunshade, stroller blanket, carrier wrap, and car seat cover.

3. Be flexible.

Keep in mind that the baby doesn’t understand your schedule. You have trained your baby to eat, sleep, and play at certain times during the day. He/she is going to maintain that schedule, regardless of your plans. You may have to sit in the back seat for a while to soothe a fussy baby or make an extra stop or two. Remember that the trip with your family is worth the effort.

4. Pack clothes in Ziploc bags.

Use large Ziploc bags to seal up your clothes. When you squeeze the air out of the bag before sealing, you create valuable space in your suitcase for more stuff. Considering how much you’ll need to bring with you, this can reduce the number of bags you need.

5. Avoid “paranoid packing.”

Be realistic about what you think you’ll need on your trip. Thirty-five toys is far too many to lug around, especially if your trip is filled with activities. If you’re staying somewhere with a washer and dryer, don’t overload yourself with clothes.

6. Travel during nap times.

You’ll make the most progresses and have the smoothest journey if you do as much traveling during baby’s nap time as possible. You know your baby’s schedule. Pick a flight that leaves just when your baby is falling asleep. If you’re driving, use this time to jump in the car and put some road behind you.

Stay Calm as a Parent Using These 5 Tips

tips for staying calm as a parentAs a parent, it’s easy to become stressed, especially if you have multiple children. You are responsible for the care of other people and want to do everything in your power to keep them safe, and prepare them for the world. Furthermore, you have your own life to think about; your own obligations and dreams. That’s a big weight to carry around. When you become so stressed you can hardly think and start yelling, you won’t be helping anyone. Use these five tips to stay calm as a parent.

1. Stop over-parenting.

One of the hardest parts of parenting is backing off, but it’s absolutely necessary to develop well-rounded people. You will cause yourself a lot of stress and anxiety if you feel compelled to run to your child every time he whimpers. Let your kids handle some of their own struggles while you watch from afar (when it’s safe, of course). Let the tantrum pass without addressing it. If your daughter has a disagreement with a schoolmate, give her a minute to work it out. You’ll be surprised how many problems don’t require your interference.

2. You aren’t just a parent.

In the early years of your child’s life, you spend a majority of your time parenting, but as they age you’ll find yourself with more free time. Don’t let parenthood define your life. Remember all the other things you like doing or the places you like going. Make time for that type of stuff. Reconnect with your friends and pick up old hobbies. When your son or daughter doesn’t want to spend time with you, don’t despair or feel abandoned. Further, your children will benefit by seeing you as a well-rounded person.

3. Remember that your kids are different people.

It’s natural to want what’s best for your children; to see them success and have fulfilling lives. But you have to remember that they are not the same as you. They have different hopes and dreams. They will be interested in different activities and hobbies, and have different skills and talents. Trying to change them will just cause you stress. If your son doesn’t enjoy baseball, he doesn’t like baseball. It’s not worth the battle to make him like it because you do. You’ll just strain the relationship.

4. Simplify your life.

Overscheduling your lives is a quick path to regular tantrums. You and I are able to bear down and push through a busy day, but our children may not have that level of self-control. When they start to feel stressed, they let us know. It isn’t necessary to get everything done in a day. The dry cleaning will be there tomorrow, it’s alright if you miss a yoga class, and the laundry will be fine in the basket for a while. Lighten your kids’ schedules, too, so they don’t feel pressured.

5. Understand you aren’t being manipulated.

It’s easy to take your child’s poor behavior. When he’s pouting the store or she’s screaming at the bank, we often feel like they’re punishing us. The truth is that young children don’t misbehave to spite you. They are testing your boundaries because that’s how they learn; they haven’t picked up the nuances of behavior yet. Every time you correct them, they learn a little more. Understand that their misunderstandings of etiquette aren’t personal.

Outdoor Nature Activities for the Kids This Spring

outdoor activities for kidsSpring time is meant to be spent outdoors! After a long winter inside, it’s time to start enjoying the nicer weather and all that nature has to offer. Teach your kids to love the great outdoors with these six nature activities:

1. Go on a picnic.

Enjoy nature by taking the kids to a local park and having a picnic! Picnics are a great spring activity for the kids because it not only allows them to run around outside, but they also get to hang out in a pretty park and eat their favorite snacks. Use this as an opportunity to get them good and tired before returning home.

2. Make a bird feeder

Use an outdoor table because this activity can get messy. Have the kids collect a few pine cones from your backyard, and then roll them in peanut butter and birdseeds. Once they are ready, put them in your trees and watch from your window as the birds flock to your fun nature project. If your children really enjoy watching the birds, you could step up to a legitimate birdhouse.

3. Make flower pictures.

Flower pictures are a cute way to bring the beauty of flowers inside without making a mess. If you have wild flowers anywhere near by, pick some with your children. Using construction paper and glue, fasten the flowers to the paper in whatever arrangement they prefer. Now you can hang them on the wall. (Eventually the petals will wilt entirely and you’ll have to discard it.)

4. Hunt for animal tracks.

If you’re up for an adventure, head to a local trail and search for animal tracks! Read this article to learn more about tracking animals. You might also find an app for your smartphone that will help you recognize different tracks. Teach them to identify deer, squirrels, raccoons, or anything else that wanders your local woods. Don’t chase anything to dangerous!

5. Plant something.

What better way to be one with nature than to plant something? Make a small garden with the kids and watch it grow together. Use this as an opportunity to teach about the value of hard work and the pride of creating something. Grow something that can be eaten later in the year so they can enjoy their work.

6. Go for a bike ride.

Another great outdoor activity for the whole family to enjoy is bike riding. Kids love riding bikes. They probably already ride them around your driveway or on your road. Expand the adventure for them by taking them on long ride. Journey to different neighborhoods, of if you’re daring, around some local trails. Challenge them to remember the way home.
