Introducing the pink flamingo sleep bag (and the story behind

In the four years we’ve been making sleep bags, we’ve only ever produced them in gender neutral designs and colours. It simply makes more ‘cents’ – because well-made, neutral ‘staples’ suit everybody and can be passed down to an unlimited number of children. You simply can’t go wrong.

But I couldn’t get over my urge to create a pink one. So… I finally did. And it hits our shelves next month. Since this product breaks the mold a little – and is quite near and dear to me personally – I thought I’d share the inspiration behind it.

Cozy Basics Pink Flamingo

Cozy Basics Pink Flamingo

There are two main reasons why I felt so compelled to go in this direction:

  1. I don’t have a girl. But I love girly things. Since there are no more children in my future – two boys are more than enough, thank you very much! – I figure my design work is the perfect place to get my feminine ‘fix’, so to speak. And you can’t get more girly than pink-on-pink.
  2. To pay homage to my mom, Carol. Firstly, she’s a breast cancer survivor, which has an obvious tie-in with the pink. She also always wore pearls – and a fantastic pink dress – whenever she got dressed up, which inspired both the specific colour of this product – and the pearls around mama flamingo’s neck.  I love adding personal touches into the design process!

3. Speaking of pink – you might be interested to know that pink is a very difficult colour to choose and get just right. I selected a nice saturated dusty pink pantone, which happens to be hot right now – and very similar to my mom’s special dress.

Janet_2_flam2

Needless to say, this is a product that has deep personal meaning for me. I had a GREAT time designing it – and would be lying if I said I didn’t love the finished product.

The first step in the design process is a digital mock-up like the one below. From there, I have samples created in every size so I can see them live and make sure all is as it should be. Then, once we’re 100% sure everything looks great, it goes into production. The whole process for a design like this one – where we’re creating a new version of an existing product and artwork – takes about eight months.

pink-flamingo_wee_urban

The pink flamingo will be available in sizes X through Y, at a cost of $38 +tax, making them a fantastic gift for that special baby girl in your life. They’ll be available for pre-order through our site on February 15th, and in stores shortly thereafter. If you have any questions at all about this product – or any others – give us a shout. Happy shopping!

Summer Grubbin’ Happened So Fast

Here’s Wee Urban’s comprehensive and thoroughly researched, top 5 list of places to eat this summer in Toronto.

So whether you’re travelling to the big city, or living in it, chances are… you’ll love the places we list.

*2 of the 5 are outdoor patios*

harvestkitchen_jpg_1022x496_q95_up_ctf

Harvest Kitchen

Harvest Kitchen is graced with two patios, one awning-covered, street-level space with room for 8 out front and the other, a 35-seat deck on the second-floor that’s surrounded by lush tree canopies. Snag a spot at brunch and indulge in pancakes and morning mimosas while soaking up the sun.

The Porch

The patio above the Rock ‘N’ Horse Saloon benefits from sweeping views of the city including unobstructed photo ops of the CN Tower. At night, the rooftop lounge feels like a street party, but by day, the place is a casual hangout with a snack bar menu to enjoy alongside beers.

Pi-Co

Pi Co.

BRAND NEW! Yorkville is now home to a quick-service pizza parlour. Pi Co. serves Neapolitan style pizza and allows you to pick your own toppings. The pizza is made in a brick fire oven, with the stones imported all the way from Italy. Pi Co. also serves up Sweet Pis for dessert, and a breakfast pizza.

20090628-stockyardssignThe Stockyards

The Stockyards is the modern day interpretation of the family diner/ BBQ joint while embracing traditional methods of dry curing, aging, and smoking that require time and patience. They also have Chicken & Waffles. Who doesn’t love Chicken & Waffles?

vesuvio-s-pizzeria-spaghetti

Vesuvio

Toronto was first introduced to New York style pizza when the Pugliese family founded Vesuvio in 1957. This is by far, without a doubt, the best pizza the “6” has to offer. So if you’re travelling West, it’s a must-stop. Grab a large pepperoni, walk down High Park Av. into the park and enjoy a pizza themed picnic with the fam.

Mmm… I’m hungry!

6 Unique Gift Ideas for the Next Baby Shower You Attend

Expectant moms and dads are often inundated with well-intentioned, yet redundant shower gifts. When you want to your gift to be truly appreciated, you can show your happiness for their new arrival and also show that you want to help them with their upcoming role as parents by showing up with one of these unique shower gifts in hand.
Trendy Baby Clothing

New parents always appreciate clothing for their little one. Rather than gift the standard colorful onesie or footed sleeper, you can give them a set of clothing that is trendy, stylish, and fun from places like Shop Sugar Babies. Clothing that is emblazoned with their favorite sports team logo or embroidered with cute designs will give the new parents something fun and beautiful to dress their baby in later.

(Wee Urban edit – Wee Urban has some amazing trendy clothes too) :)
Baby Bullet

Adults today are crazy about making their own smoothies. With the Baby Bullet, they can also make their baby a fresh smoothie that contains their little one’s favorite fruits and veggies. With more parents getting away from feeding their babies processed baby food, the Baby Bullet can be the ideal shower gift.

Baby Cry Analyzer

Even the most experienced of parents may have no idea why their baby is crying. They can know for sure when you give them an innovative Baby Cry Analyzer, as found from this Buzzfeed post. It shows them if their baby is hungry, sleepy, colicky, or experiencing other distresses.

Stroller Storage Organizer

Moms know what a hassle it can be to carry a purse while pushing a stroller. When you show up with a stroller storage organizer in hand, you relieve this mom’s future frustration at being unable to keep her purse up on her shoulder while pushing the stroller. The organizer fits over a stroller’s handles and has enough room for a phone, bill fold, and other essentials.

Battery Operated Nail Cutter

New moms and dads dread cutting their babies’ nails. You can make it easier for them by giving them a battery operated nail cutter. This cutter uses gentle motions to cut a baby’s nails and helps avoid painful cuts and tears.

Baby Barolo Cocoon

Babies love to be swaddled, but few parents actually master the blanket swaddling technique. You can help new moms and dads keep their little one swaddled by giving them a Baby Barolo cocoon. This blanket keeps Baby cocooned and happy.

Choosing unique and thoughtful shower gifts can be a challenge. You can help new parents out with these innovative and meaningful baby presents.

Beauty and Cosmetics during Pregnancy: The Good and the Bad

0206931

Every pregnant woman wants to look her best during her pregnancy, but it is hard to use the same makeup you used before you got pregnant. Pregnancy changes your body chemistry, the composition of your skin and the way your body looks in the light. Your makeup, fragrances and skincare regimen all must change during your pregnancy, and you may find they will stay changed after you have your baby.
How Your Makeup Reacts to Your Skin

The makeup you normally use may not react to your face as it always has. The color you use on your face may not look the same as it has in the past, and these colors may not stay on your face as they once had. It is possible that your makeup will cause you to break out in hives, or you may form a rash. You should consider changing your foundation, blush and powder during your pregnancy. The change in your body chemistry may require you to maintain this change in your makeup after you have your baby.

Skincare

The skincare products you use may not give you the same results they once did. You are counting on your lotions and moisturizers to protect your skin, but these lotions may not do the job they once did. You cannot continue to use the same moisturizer if it does not help you, and your skin may dry out much faster than it would otherwise.

Your skincare regimen may need to increase when you are pregnant. Chronically dry skin is going to plague you when you are pregnant, and you may consider using more moisturizer than you did in the past. Many women resort to moisturizing their whole bodies every day, and you must keep up with this routine to prevent stretch marks. Do as much as you can to keep your skin moist and soft.
Sunscreen

A woman who is not accustomed to wearing sunscreen may need to start using sunscreen during her pregnancy. Your olive complexion may have helped you a good bit at the beach, but you must start wearing sunscreen because your skin is so much more sensitive.

Women who do not typically use sunscreen may turn to a foundation that has sun protection built-in. You need to keep your skin from being damaged in the hot sun, and you must take steps that will prevent sunburn and sun damage.

Skin Irritation

You may go to bed with your makeup on after a long day, and your skin has never reacted poorly to your makeup. You must start washing your face every evening to ensure your skin is safe. You will likely feel a good bit of irritation when you leave your makeup on for too long, and you may need to use a professional makeup remover.

Daily Makeup Application

You should change from pads to sponges when you apply your makeup, and you may consider scaling back the amount of makeup you are putting on every day. Reduce the amount of makeup you are using to help your skin cope with your pregnancy. Your pregnancy is going to make your skin reject a good bit of your makeup, and the makeup that you choose to wear going forward should be as light as possible.

Your body will not respond well to all the makeup you typically wear. You must make a change that is going to help you look your best during your pregnancy. You may choose to keep these makeup changes after you have your baby, but you must make careful changes for the health of your skin. If you are unsure about certain cosmetic products while you are pregnant, it is wise to consult with a physician like Dr. Gilbert Webb, to see what is safe for you.

All Ages Welcome! – Top 5 Family Sports Regardless of Age!

Active-Family-1-e1344356304521Staying active is integral to maintaining a healthy lifestyle!

There’s no better way to instil the need for activity then playing sports with your kids as a family!

And despite the popular notion, there is no age limit!

Here are 5 family sports that you can play with your kids, no matter their age, from strollers to scooters to sports cars.

toddler-swimming

1) Swimming

This is a no brainer! Toddlers in pools are an age old practice, and it helps promote family activity, fun and fitness. According to multiple studies, swimming is the best workout anyone can get. There is limited stress on muscles, and more games to play than you can count. Not overlooking the fact that learning how to swim at a young age can one day save lives.

photo 2

2) Biking

Grab your bikes and hit a trail! Biking as a family is an overall great experience for your kids and you. With the Sun out, sunscreen and water are integral! Throw a seat on the back of your bike for your 6 month old and even if they start napping halfway through the ride, the family is still all together! Wee Urban’s President Holly Maclean just participated in the Rouge Valley 10K with her family, and it was an amazing experience that she recommends for all!

StrollerAtDufferinRinkDec07

3) Skating

Get a stroller with some blades on it, or hey, the wheels might work just fine on ice. There’s ways to have family fun in the winter too! Go Skating! Especially if you’re from the great white north, skating is basically a must in the winter. There’s always public skating happening during the year, it’s free and it’s great family fun! So check with your local township for schedules! Well, in a couple months…

4) Rollerblading

It’s skating… but in the summer. Rollerblading is great for families as well and it’s cost effective as you can find good rollerblades for cheap. Put baby in a stroller, strap some helmets, gloves, knees and elbow pads on the kids and get out on a trail or find an indoor rink somewhere. These are rare, but they are out there.

5) Tobogganing

Another winter go-to. You can get family sleds that fit 4 people, hold on tight to the little one and go down a small hill. A little bit more risky, but totally worth it with the fun that they will have. Tobogganing is winter… they are basically synonymous… Go have fun, get the kids home and dry, make some hot chocolate, throw on a fire, and they’ll be lights out in less than 20!

Family sports do more than just make your kids fall asleep (which is a plus) They also promote physical activity, family commitment and communication and brings you closer to your kids. It might even inspire them to further pursue some sort of sport or at the very least physical activity.

Check out the map of Holly’s ride!

And of course what happened to her 2 boys Zachary and Jacob once they got into the car.

6 Specialty Field Experts Every Family Should Have on their Contact List When Needed

ID-100286457

Another great guest blog from our friend Rachelle Wilber!

Life happens, and you want your family to be prepared. When unexpected problems arise, it is nice to know exactly who to call to help you. It’s important to build good relationships with people who will assist you with short term notice. But exactly what kind of experts do you need? Here is a list of six experts to get on your contact list before you need them.
Lawyer
You just never know when you might need legal representation from an attorney, like St. Louis criminal defense lawyer Richard Lzano. Lawyers can handle everything from creating a will to defending you if wrongly accused of a crime and just about anything in between. Go ahead and get a good lawyer on your contact list. Let them assist you with creating legal documents for your family and create a good rapport with them when you really need help.
Financial Planner
When you have an income, you may need help managing it. A financial planner will help you make the most of your money by helping you save for large expenditures, your children’s education, and even retirement. As your income grows, a financial planner will help you get the most out of your investments. They might even be willing to help you out come tax season. You might think that you could do all this yourself, but the US News advises a financial planner because they can see your situation in an objective and unemotional way, which will help them advise you accurately.
Party Planner
You may not be in the habit of throwing lavish gatherings, but most people will put together the occasional bridal shower or graduation party. Having a party planner on your contacts list will help you make sure these events go off without a hitch. You don’t have to spend a fortune hiring a party planner if you have one that you use every time. They’re likely to offer discounts.
Computer Expert
Just about everyone owns a computer these days, but not everyone knows how to run every program they need to or how to fix the system if it malfunctions. Keep a computer expert on your speed dial for when you have a presentation due, and your printer just won’t communicate with your printer.
Babysitter
If you have kids, then there will be times that you need a little help. You might not think a qualified babysitter is important, but it does happen that you will need care unexpectedly when your usual caregivers – mom, neighbor, etc. – just aren’t available. When this happens, you need someone you can trust to call and know your kids are in good hands. Same concept applies for animal care.
Handy Man
If you own your own home, then a reliable handy man (or woman) is a must have. Windows will break, appliances can stop working, and drains do clog. Your family needs someone they can call to take care of problems like this. You will be less worried about who is in your home if it is the same person every time. A good handy man, much like a maintenance person at an apartment complex, will be knowledgeable about large appliance repair, electrical wiring, plumbing, and some carpentry.

3 Key Ways Pets Influence Children

A Wee Urban Guest Blog from Melissa Stevens!

Raising a child may be the most fulfilling process a human can experience, but it is truly based on a bittersweet mixture of events and emotions. Of course, the bitter part emerges from all the worries and anxiety that being responsible for another (helpless) human being can cause. The sweet part comprises all the beautiful moments that make up parenthood. If a parent wants to make a child’s upbringing even more interesting and colorful, getting a pet is a fabulous way to do it. Pets affect children’s development in an extraordinarily beneficial way.

altattribute

Boosting Imagination

One of the most important things that should be encouraged while a child is growing is the development of imagination. The evolution of the cognitive part of the child’s brain should be boosted from the earliest age. Sure, reading stories and playing with your child will give incentive to the development of both kinesthetic and mental skills, but if you add a pet to this cognition-boost set, the outcome will be even better. You can introduce different pets to your child and encourage him or her to become interested in them, as well as develop a higher level of empathy. In addition, reading to them about animals will help bolster your child(ren)’s imagination even more. As they get older, they will develop a life-long, animal-friendly attitude.

Stronger Family Bonds

Many families have problems when it comes to spending time together, but a pet can turn the things upside down and give birth to a special bond within your family. Instead of staring at TV every night of the week, you could spend at least a couple of nights playing with the pet and teaching your child how to treat it in the best way. Also, such occasions are a great opportunity to create a sense of togetherness, and teach your child that many things can be done more easily if all the family members participate. It could be mere dog/cat brushing, but you could also be something more involved, like a flea and tick or cleaning up after the pet, to introduce your child(ren) to some less pleasant duties that come with pet owning.

altattribute

Pet-Related Duties For Better Working Habits

A child can be brought up in many ways and every mother develops and applies some special rules of her own. But making a pet become a part of your child’s life usually has one common effect in most of the pet-having families – they become organized in a better way. Smaller pets, like tortoises and budgies are not that demanding, so they could be very attractive first pets for the beginning of your child’s active pet-owning life. For starters, kids will learn to feed them on a regular basis and become aware that animals also need emotional approval from their owners. Perhaps once children learn those skills, they may be ready for a cat or a dog. That way they will be taught that a larger pet causes more responsibility, just as it is the case with real life.

It is clear that a great bond can be established between a pet and a child, but every parent should understand that only with their help will children be able to develop special feelings for pets, and learn how to behave towards pets (and people) in an appropriate way. A pet can be great fun for the entire family, but it also requires a lot of care and attention, just like a child.

St. Paddy’s With Your Kids

1) Assuming your kids aren’t yet built for a traditional game of Irish football or rugby, try some of these games in honour of St. Patrick’s Day! Play a  game of Hot Potato or consider a “potato hunt” (think: Easter egg hunt but with small potatoes) or a “Pot o’ Gold” treasure hunt (a search for gold chocolate coins). All these easy household games will get your kids involved in St. Patrick’s Day and hopefully make them tired, a bit earlier!

2) Depending where you live, check local event listings for a St. Patrick’s Day parade! Dress in your best green attire, and get ready to watch some cool bagpipers, Irish step dancers, and fire engines roll through. It’s like Santa is coming to town 9 months early…. and is wearing green!

3) Stock up on green construction paper and craft supplies, and get creative with your little leprechauns. St. Patrick’s day crafts are adorable and make great party decorations or gifts for grandparents. Plus, who doesn’t love making crafts!

4) Eat some Irish food why don’t ya!!! Popular Celtic cuisine includes potato dishes , soda bread, meaty stews and dinner pies. So there’s plenty to choose from beyond not-so-kid-friendly corned beef and cabbage for your St.Patrick’s Day. Or simply dye some of your favorite treats, such as cupcakes and milkshakes, with green food colouring. What kid doesn’t love colourful food!

5)Learn, learn, learn! Take some time to explore the meaning of St. Patrick’s Day and test your family on some Irish trivia. Do you know why the shamrock is a symbol of St. Paddy’s Day? No! Well you should! Get the kids to ask the questions and see if they can stump their family members!

Finally… you can always do all 5 of these things in one night! After all, for most, St. Paddy’s is something that you do in excess!

If you have any cool St. Paddy’s Day traditions! Leave a comment below! And check out our Wee Love It Wednesday this week… for a little Green Envy!

Tips for Giving Kids Responsibilities Around the Home

give kids responsibilitiesFamilies are a unit and they function the best when everyone is working toward the same goal. Even though your children require you to care for them, that doesn’t mean they are entirely helpless (although some kids end up that way). Use these tips to give your kids some responsibilities around the home.

1. Give them reasonable tasks.

If you ask your six-year-old to organize the garage, of course she is going to resist. She can’t move many of your items, let alone manage a project that size. You have to give them tasks that are within their abilities to complete, even if those tasks are just pieces of a whole. For example, your child may not be strong enough to push a vacuum cleaner, but she can run the extender along the edges and underneath furniture.

2. Let them make decisions.

Any time you can give your child an opportunity to make decisions, you will cement them in the process. This gives them a sense of ownership over the task or chore. For example, ask your child if she would like to put away toys or dust the shelves. By simply making the decision she’ll feel empowered to complete the task.

3. Patiently answer questions.

It might seem, at first, that your child is asking questions or faking confusion to get out of the chore. Often this isn’t the case. You’ll need to give very specific instructions to your child for even the most basic tasks. Remember, she hasn’t swept a floor before, so you’ll have to walk her through holding the broom, brushing the floor and scooping up the debris.

4. Involve them, even if it’s not practical.

In order to instill a habit, you have to start young. Have your children help you around the house, even if their “help” makes the job take longer. Don’t be tempted to blur through the house getting things in order. Tote your kids along with you and teach them the steps. Think of it like an investment: the more time you spend now teaching them, the less you’ll spend later.

5. Write everything down.

If you’ve gotten to the point with your children that you’re designating responsibilities, it’s time for a chore chart. A chore chart can be anything – a calendar, a list, a wheel, or something clever you invent yourself. Use anything you can to write everyone’s responsibility down. This gives them accountability. They can’t say they forgot or didn’t know if the chart clearly defines their chores.
