At the start of every year, many people make New Year’s resolutions to lose weight or be healthier, and many people lose all their motivation after a few weeks. But resolutions are easier to keep when you’re working together as a family. This way, you’re accountable to each other as group and you work to avoid disappointing each other. Use this year as an opportunity to drop some pounds, get fit, and have fun as a family by using one (or all!) of these family activities.
1. Martial Arts
The martial arts provide significant benefits to adults and kids. You don’t have to compete in violent, match-style competitions to be successful. In fact, most martial artists don’t. Not only will you get a great workout, but you’ll learn a lot about patience, self-control, and discipline. Martial arts studies often offer classes for both adults and kids so you can all practice together.
You probably already have a set of bikes for your family. Locate some nearby trails and go for a ride. Not only is biking a fun and great way to get in shape, but it’s cheap. After the cost of the bikes, it doesn’t cost a penny to ride around. Take leisurely rides around your neighborhood on the pavement, or really feel the burn in the woods.
Helpful tip: Review bike safety laws, wear proper protective gear, and be ready for an emergency when you’re biking away from home.
3. TV Fitness
Even when you’re lounging around watching television, you can include some activity. Play little games were you try to fit in 20 sit-ups during the commercial break, or do a push up every time a character does something silly. Play a game called “Coach” where you take turns ordering each other to do exercises. But don’t approach it like a chore. If you’re interested, your kids will be too.
Helpful tip: “Follow the Leader” can easily be made into a workout if you’re clever.
4. Laser Tag
Laser tag is a fun game you can find in arcades, roller-skating rinks, or family fun centers. The game is simple; you vest or belt and carry a laser gun (which is just a dolled-up laser pointer). Shoot your opponents in an indoor arena to score points or remove them from the game. There’s no projectiles flying around; it’s all electronic. Once you get moving, you’ll get lost in the game and forget you’re there for a workout!
5. Ice Skating
Most people haven’t been ice skating because they fear they can’t do it. Believe it or not, ice skating is much easier than it looks and you’ll pick it up quickly. You don’t have to perform complicated tricks to have fun; even skating in circles can be fun. Find a local rink or use a nearby pond (just be absolutely sure the ice is thick enough to support you all).
