It’s back to school time, which means you’ll spend a portion of your morning packing lunches. If you’re like many houses in the world, your pantry is jammed with individually packaged lunchbox-sized snacks that aren’t as healthy for your kids as you would like. Fortunately, there are many organic and natural snack products available for your kids, you just have to look a bit harder. Here are six of my favorite organic snacks to offer your children.
1. Quinn Popcorn
These popcorn snacks come in a variety of interesting flavors, like maple & sea salt, or parmesan and rosemary. They are organic and non-GMO and they come in a biodegradable bag. They use a fake butter flavor, so there are no preservatives or additives. They come out to about $2.50 per package, which is a little more than I’d like to pay for a one-time snack, but the health benefits are worth it, I think. You can get them at Whole Foods, Amazon or Abe’s Market.
2. Giddy Up & Go Granola
This granola-based cereal packs a ton of protein and MUFAs that your kids need to start their day right. It’s the cleanest form of breakfast energy you can give them. It’s not bland like many organic cereals, either. They use organic agave and nectar to sweeten it just a tad for kids. You can find it at Whole Foods.
3. Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt
There’s still a bit of summer left, so your kids might enjoy a frozen treat when they arrive home from school. Unlike most frozen snacks, however, these Greek yogurt pops don’t come laden with high fructose corn syrup. They also use hormone-free milk. It’s a much healthier alternative to ice cream or even traditional frozen yogurt snacks with an overabundance of sugar. You can find them at Whole Foods, Safeway and Costco.
4. Way Better Snacks
It’s hard to find an organic potato chip, but your kids will probably ask for them because all their friends have chips in their lunch bags. Way Better Snacks uses organic whole grains, sunflower oil, and quinoa, among other healthy ingredients. They come in several flavors that are low-sodium, no cholesterol, no sugar, full of MUFAs, and gluten-free. Admittedly they’re pricey at $3.50 per bag. You can get them at Whole Foods, Wegman’s and some specialty grocery stores.
5. Silly String Cheese
The perfect on-the-go snack for toddlers will always be string cheese. It’s easy to carry, unwrap and eat, and it doesn’t make a mess. Organic Creamery’s Sill String Cheese is low in fat and cholesterol, full of calcium and protein, and made from organic milk. They come out to about a dollar per tube of cheese, so the price is good. You’ll find them at most natural food stores and of course Whole Foods.
6. Organic fruit and vegetable medley
The simplest and healthiest snack you can provide your kids will always be a selection of organic fruits and vegetables that you purchased, chopped and packaged yourself. You don’t have to worry about excessive sugar, fat or pesticides in their food. You can get them in any local supermarket and there’s a fruit or veggie that even the pickiest of kids like. (They also don’t make a mess, which is a win in my book.)
