In the four years we’ve been making sleep bags, we’ve only ever produced them in gender neutral designs and colours. It simply makes more ‘cents’ – because well-made, neutral ‘staples’ suit everybody and can be passed down to an unlimited number of children. You simply can’t go wrong.
But I couldn’t get over my urge to create a pink one. So… I finally did. And it hits our shelves next month. Since this product breaks the mold a little – and is quite near and dear to me personally – I thought I’d share the inspiration behind it.

Cozy Basics Pink Flamingo
There are two main reasons why I felt so compelled to go in this direction:
- I don’t have a girl. But I love girly things. Since there are no more children in my future – two boys are more than enough, thank you very much! – I figure my design work is the perfect place to get my feminine ‘fix’, so to speak. And you can’t get more girly than pink-on-pink.
- To pay homage to my mom, Carol. Firstly, she’s a breast cancer survivor, which has an obvious tie-in with the pink. She also always wore pearls – and a fantastic pink dress – whenever she got dressed up, which inspired both the specific colour of this product – and the pearls around mama flamingo’s neck. I love adding personal touches into the design process!
3. Speaking of pink – you might be interested to know that pink is a very difficult colour to choose and get just right. I selected a nice saturated dusty pink pantone, which happens to be hot right now – and very similar to my mom’s special dress.
Needless to say, this is a product that has deep personal meaning for me. I had a GREAT time designing it – and would be lying if I said I didn’t love the finished product.
The first step in the design process is a digital mock-up like the one below. From there, I have samples created in every size so I can see them live and make sure all is as it should be. Then, once we’re 100% sure everything looks great, it goes into production. The whole process for a design like this one – where we’re creating a new version of an existing product and artwork – takes about eight months.
The pink flamingo will be available in sizes X through Y, at a cost of $38 +tax, making them a fantastic gift for that special baby girl in your life. They’ll be available for pre-order through our site on February 15th, and in stores shortly thereafter. If you have any questions at all about this product – or any others – give us a shout. Happy shopping!
